Last week Spain hosted the US WNT in a friendly in Alicante: Match reports on AS and TSN Spain XI: Paños; Torrejón, Irene Paredes, Pereira, Mapi León; Meseguer, Losada, Putellas; Caldentey, Amanda; and Jenni Hermoso. USA: Naeher; Sonnett, Dahlkemper, Sauerbrunn, Dunn; Ertz, Horan, Lavelle; Heath, Morgan and Rapinoe The game had 9,100 in attendance, a Spain WNT record but it's far below the women's league's highest crowds.
And the result was quite good, only 0-1 and with an own goal. I'm happy my countrywomen are improving so much in last years and with very low support.
I would sort of disagree with the way the coach is heading the Spanish NT; 1). He felt like 'draining the swamp' by her getting rid if many of his vets, yet so.e of them like Vero & Bermudez who seem, still better players than what he got now. 2) He still refuses to bring youth star striker Claudia Pina even though he's been critically panned got not having any world class finishers 3) he insists on using 7 Barca starters, even though it's Athletico Madrid that keeps winning the league title 4) he's trying to make his own version of the ticci taca but the skill needed to it off is just not there yet in wosi. Instead the playing style of continued short passing(to maintain possession) looks ponderously slow while giving the other side enough ti.r to set up defences 5) oddly hasn't pushed this team(until now) to take on stronger opposition, instead playing them in inferior routines like the Cypress Cup
couple of items, Don't know how accurate this story is as surely our........less than a half dozen Euro regulars would of reported this my now Record women's football crowd in Spain - The Women's Game - For the love of the game and if permitted, the un-official Catalonia NT takes on Chile I watched half, they do a pretty good job vs a team that not only going yo the WC, but beat Australia away in a friendly a few months back. Just wish they could of given their full name lineups instead of just the first names. Otherwise colorful unis/attractive ladies
NIRE BILBO HIRIARI ESKERRIK ASKO!!!!!!! This is a step in the right direction, and hopefully we continue to show love to the women who represent our club as well as those who represent the country! AUPA ATHLETIC!
That's an amazing attendance - bravo, Athletic Bilbao. Similar to the crowds when they celebrated the 2016 championship. Match highlights: Athletic Club Bilbao 0-2 Atlético de Madrid (blue) | Copa de la Reina - www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBHa3nJCXGs (Goals: Ángela Sosa 45', Aurélie Kaci 90') Someone put together different videos of how the crowd grew. TVE says the previous record was 35,000, also at Bilbao, when they won the Supercopa in 2003 against Híspalis. The stadium capacity (San Mamés) is 53,000, which hasn't been reached this season. About the money question @luvdagame, a report pre-match said the club sold out the allocation, and kids, schools and club members got free tix. Liga Iberdrola's record crowd is 22,002 for the Madrid derby in 2018. Another Liga game in December came close to that (I'll post it later). Athletic Bilbao treating women's football as a big event is the most important thing – clubs using large stadiums, it isn't always as successful as this game, but it always raises the attendance.
And guess how many of the things I read are in a good way about that? Is disgusting how many people treat women's football in Spain, I can't stand that.
Wow, such great atmosphere. Looked like a great match too with Athletic really going for it. Too bad the ref sent the wrong player off though.
Bilbao had two good chances and squandered them both. In the first half, on that good ball across the face of the Madrid goal, the Bilbao player should have headed the ball in the net--that was the play to make. Instead she tried to kick the ball, but it was too high to kick and she muffed it. Then in the second half a forward, after getting a beautiful through ball, was in on the keeper and missed the net--failed to put the ball inside the far post. They also got thwarted by a nice save by the Madrid keeper in the second half, I think. Meanwhile, the Bilbao keeper kind of botched the first Madrid goal, IMO; was slow to react, did not move her feet, and could not get to the ball. Great atmosphere, though--and thanks for the highlights!
Typically the woso games in most of Europe are inexpensive(maybe around $5) as compared to go to watch Ellis take on an tomato can which cost me at the NO Superdome, $27 a ticket, 12 bucks for parking, 9.50 for a beer. 6 bucks for an hot dog. The huge crowd most likely more contributed to Bilbao being in the heart of Basque country, an area that if not in full revolution, still has a sense of identity & freedom vs the big bad wolves of the central authority of Madrid Plus it was a cup game vs the #1 team in the country, which is an bigger event(as compared other Euros nations) since the league is say too oversized with 16 teams)
The other three quarter-finals: Also in the Basque country, Real Sociedad had an impressive 4-0 knockout win over the club 3 spots behind them in the league, Rayo Vallecano of Madrid. Yes, gora... "Finalera!", and those are all the words I know. - https://www.realsociedad.eus/eu/albisteak/detailea/finalera-4 (This was the first Basque-language article I'd ever seen. It is very different from every other language!)
Quick update on the Liga Femenina before the big game on Sunday. This was the last time the top 2 met: Atlético Madrid are now top by 6 points, as they've won 15 league games in a row. Their closest wins were 2-1 at Real Betis (5th) and 2-1 at Granadilla Tenerife (7th). They also bested Athletic Bilbao at home, 3-0, before the historic Cup game in Bilbao. Barça (2nd) fell further behind in the league, with a shock defeat to Andalusian club Sporting Huelva (10th) FC Barcelona 2-3 Sporting Club de Huelva. 21ª jornada - www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGyRI4h4X_c (Goals: Asisat Oshoala 17', 84' / Raquel Fernandes 59', Stefanie Van der Gragt OG 61', Flor Bosegundo 67') Barça have beaten the three clubs below them, Levante (3rd), Athletic Bilbao (4th) and Betis (5th), and the league leaders Atlético have the more difficult matches ahead, but a Barça win in Madrid on Sunday is vital to their title hopes. As seen in the vid, the Catalan club signed Nigeria's Oshoala, who has 4 goals so far. At the bottom, 2 teams will go to the new Primera B 2019/20 – Málaga and Logroño (17pts) are currently set for relegation, and Madrid CFF (18pts) are looking nervous. Yesterday last-place Logroño lost 4-3 at Bilbao, with a 94th-minute goal – Cameroon's Dorine Chuigoué was unlucky to score for both teams. (Match report)
Correct, their league matches were priced from zero to five euros. Match at Madrid, Mar 17 2019: - Zero euros for Atl Madrid club members - 5 euros for general public. https://www.atleticodemadrid.com/no...a-de-liga-se-jugara-en-el-wanda-metropolitano Similar scheme for previous league match at Barcelona, Nov 18 2018: - Zero euros for Barcelona club members. - Half an euro for general public. https://www.mundodeportivo.com/futb...barca-atletico-iberdrola-futbol-femenino.html
Those ticket prices beg the question: how much revenue is generated by clubs in Spanish women's league? For the next 3 seasons, 14 out of 16 clubs from Spanish women's league will receive 9 million euros in exchange of TV rights. That comes out to ~214K euros per club, per year. The deal starts with 2019-2020 season. Both Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao decided not to sign that TV rights deal. https://www.sport.es/es/noticias/fu...a-recibiran-millones-euros-television-7343349
At the moment, the focus is still on raising interest/awareness, not chasing profits. (Which, of course, is totally obvious to all of us who know about the historical imbalance in women's and men's football caused by cultures of misogyny in many countries.) Well, that raises the bar. We'll see what happens on the day, but Football-Espana reports "over 60,000" sold, and El Diario has Atlético saying it's a sell-out and the ticket offices will be closed on Sunday. For the record: Atlético Madrid v Barcelona, at Estadio Metropolitano Kickoff: 13:00 CET (12:00 GMT), Sun 17 Mar The TV coverage in Spain is on GOL/Movistar+, and hopefully some kind of internet coverage will emerge too. At the very least, you'll find Liga updates on Twitbook: https://twitter.com/hashtag/ligaiberdrola?f=tweets&vertical=default The Metropolitano, which hosted 22,000 fans at the Madrid derby in May 2018(photo: Fernandopascullo, cc-by-sa)

Not just a Liga record, but from what I've seen online, its a new world record for women's club soccer.
