    Snip:

Alex DeOliveira, a senior this coming season at East Carteret who served a vital role in last year’s 13-5 Mariners team that advanced to the third round of the 1A state playoffs for the first time ever, has been cordially invited by the Getafe FC youth soccer club in Spain for a legitimate 10-day tryout. That could ultimately alter the course of, not only DeOliveira’s life, but the legacy of the county’s soccer prestige.

    ...

Getafe FC noticed DeOliveira after receiving a highlight tape showcasing the junior’s electrifying skills.

    With his coach:

Whatever might have happened at Getafe, he's expected back for his senior HS season:

Diaz has five seniors — Alex DeOliveira, John Duncan, Gavin Hillebrand, Eddie Minchin and Gaston Sanders — returning to action this season, all of whom will play pivotal roles in the coach’s aggressive scheme. Aaron Stranathan, who did not play last season, will also join the team as a senior.

That same paper has published an in-depth account of DeOliveira's visit with Getafe, which should be of interest if you're interested in the experience for players who head overseas for tryouts like this:

The Mariner player, who turned 17 on Saturday, got the opportunity of a lifetime this summer when he attended an invitation-only tryout with Getafe CF’s youth team in Spain. It was an invitation of massive proportions. And while it isn’t official yet, DeOliveira is planning on returning to Spain next summer to continue his training.

Reward the publication and give 'em a read:

And if soccer doesn't work out, he can always fall back on starring in the Lifetime movie "Beyond Screech - the Dustin Diamond story."

Suits me. He's a year away from having a team in any case.

This trail seems fairly cold. He would probably have just finished up school if he enrolled right out of HS and graduated in four years.
