I need some help from the old timers on the board. Does anyone have any knowledge about a soccer team called Flamengo SC? They were located here in Utah and played in the Open Cup in 1995. Gary and Ellie Cole ran the club and some players included Rick Jensen, John Ragsdale (GK), & Steve Sengelmann. I have been asked to see if I could track down who played and specifically who scored for the club in that 95 Open Cup. Does anyone have any information about this club? To be honest, I had never heard of them before today.
I could be mistaken but I think Todd Miller was on the team and this could be where he was seen, and taken by Columbus Crew???
Yeah I can't remember if this is when it happened. He was playing for Flemengo in some tournament (maybe Open Cup) and had some good game and was taken in the draft by Columbus. Not sure if he played for them.
Huh, didn't know MLS had an original member from Westminster college http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todd_Miller
Where's Waldo? Love the kits - nice contrast of jeans, knee socks, and classic MNT style compared to the white prison style short shorts and shirt.
That is a classic photo! Are you the lone striker going in or are you one of the three defenders all bunched up together?
With regards to Flamengo SC I am drawing a blank. Maybe some of the Blitzz FC supporters would know more. RAF guys still out there? My earliest Utah soccer fandom was at Utah Freezz games. Ugh, those were brutal now that I think about it. And sadly I only went to a couple of Blitzz games.
Basic as in 'White Boys FC'? Oh wait, that was far enough back that kid teams didn't use FC, SC, United or any of those other things...my youth teams always had more generic mascot-style names.
Calling old skool Utah soccer fans. @Lucky13 @Blitzz Supporter @blitzzfan @Lizzie Bee @Blitzz Boy @the cup @rsl neil @Czar Pazzo
I think we were called "Woods Cross". Only team in the city. Bountiful had 2 so they had to pick names. I believe they were the Bullets and the Bees. Alliteration was apparently big in '75.
When I played baseball as a kid we were called the Blues, the other team was called the Reds, if there was a third it was the Whites. And that was the way every township/village/hamlet/borough called their multiple teams. Now they are sponsored and called the Yankees and Dodgers.
My goodness. Nothing about the Golden Spikers? What kind of soccer fans are y'all? I'm not even a Utah native and I know this stuff... because... I'm a soccer fan? My word! Read THIS mofo's. All that info and no mention of a Flemengo SC. You may want to check out a place called Brazil.
Flamengo was a club team, not a pro team. Golden Spikers is a nice throwback. Did anyone go to Sting games at the old Dirk's Field. The team was co-owned by Bill Murray. I remember going to the inaugural Freezz game. I had a lot of fun watching them, but it was definitely not as good as RSL.
I went to probably half of the Sting games with my dad while they were here. And I hate coal-mine Bill Murray.
What a coincidence. I went to that game as well. I was extremely excited to see Balboa play live, mainly due to watching his bike attempt in WC '94. I believe I was in 9th or 10th grade for this Blitzz game.
Beau Brown's wife worked for the same company I do. I met her the summer I did my internship, and she always promised me free tickets. Never came through on the promise. Oh well. I had a lot of fun at the Freezz games. Wasn't there a really tall guy named Henderson? I remember him looking a lot like Peter Crouch does on the field. Just looked a little out of place.
