I'd like to see a little more teeth.

Also, what happened to the rifle???

    Looks great, though.

definitely need to add some details to this, teeth included. i was just massing out the big stuff first, then going back in to tidy things up.

i was back-and-forth about the rifle, especially with the PA, NJ and DE flags posted all showing some type of agriculture/farming equipment. and if the bottom parts of the 'crossbones' are to look like bones, then a rifle seems a bit out of place.

the franklin-esque hair is giving me some problems. it's not looking quite right yet, so i'm debating whether it should be on there or not. we'll see.

i think i'm about 95% done with this now ... the hair just doesn't work, in my opinion, so it's not in the logo. and i don't have the text in it yet, obviously. as in the sketch, i was going to put "Sons of Ben" in the top portion of the banner, and "Est. 2007" in the bottom part, unless someone has a better suggestion.

    take a look ...

    -EDIT-

and here it is with the text ... i'd say i'm pretty much done, unless there are any elements that need to be changed, removed and/or added.

    You've outdone yourself.

I need to have that on a T-Shirt sooner than later.

I dig it. But...if you're still open to suggestions - would adding a short tail to the 'kite' fit? I'm having a hard time picturing it in my head.

Awesome job. Where can we be seen and how many of us wearing tees with the logo will it take to convince an investor if he builds it we will come?

    Nice job Dillon!

I would rep you but I have given too much already.

A kite tail might be nice, like DaMunk said, it will allow the viewer to more quickly figure out that its suppose to be a kite in the background.

Any chance we can see at least one "bad" logo with the hair in it? yeah know just for a final look before we dump it?

Andy, this is awesome! I dig everything except the "N" in the font.

Both N's in the Sons of Ben look like they are written backwards.
This is a very small trivial thing compared to your awesome work. I certainly owe you another free lunch

    No kite tail

One version with the name and established date
One without any banners at all - just the diamond with the symbols.

I think we'd use the bannered version on the site and on formal stuff. But could use the flexibility of a non-worded version.

No tail, it ain't a kite.

I agree it might screw it up, but thats reality.

I don't think it has to be a kite - with the key and the lightning everybody gets where we are going. I think whoever suggested kite helped Dillon to a marvelous and unique design element to use as a field for the entire logo.

Is now a bad time to bring up the fact that maybe not all of the club members will be "sons" of Ben?

    just kidding.

No moreso than pointing out to neo-feminists that Good Christian Men Rejoice and All men are created equal are not actually gender specific.

i'll try to take another stab at the hair, and post what it looks like for all to ridicule, i mean see. i was too embarrassed to post it for a couple reasons, the biggest one being there was nowhere for it to 'terminate', because the dude ain't gots no shoulders.

i don't think everything in a logo (in this case the 'kite') needs to be literal. like bryan said, between the lightning, the key, and the bifocals (you like 'em SP?), there's a definite relation to ben franklin, and thus a direction relation to the group's name.

i can easily make a non-banner version ... it's just a matter of turning off a layer. i'm concerned the space beneath the skull may look too empty, but then again, that may not be a bad thing. do people still want the 'Est. 2007' on there (is it accurate?), or something else maybe?

looking on DaFont for a colonial-esque font, this was the best one i found. unfortunately (and i agree) the 'N' does look a whee bit funky. what was the second font use on mdelrossi's SoB logo?

let's do a breakdown of the elements, and their heraldic meanings (if any), shall we?
    • diamond-shaped crest - reminiscent of ben's famous kite (see key and lightning bolts below)
    • skull and crossbones - an ominous, intimidating image, reminding us of our mortality (and reminds us of pirates, ARRR!)
    • scythe - harkens back to the region's agricultural heritage
    • oar - harkens back to the region's nautical heritage
    • banners - a reward for valiant service
    • bifocals - ben invented them, and they are synonymous with the man
    • key - guardianship and dominion, also works as symbol of ben franklin (see lightning bolts)
    • lightning bolts - refers to ben's experiments with lightning (plus are a cool, dynamic graphic symbol)
    • crack in skull - a direction connection to one of the most recognizable symbols of the country, the liberty bell
thanks for all the input, and more praise and kudos are welcome! :p :D

The second font of Del Rossi's (if you're talking about my hack job) was Serlio LT Std

I am thrilled with the way this has turned out. I don't think the hair gets included - the logo has deep enough connection to Ben already. Great Job with the elements and molding everyone's suggestions into our identity.

its taken from the original name of the club, 1836 (the founding year of houston.) small time politicians tried to make a name for themselves by complaining, so it was changed to dynamo. i guess it is a little untruthful. oh well, we have the cup.

I think it looks great A. Dillon. ;)
I really like the bifocals, and that was the main element that it was missing. The key and lightning bolts are good touches.

It doesn't really need a kite. I was merely stating that if you were trying to make that polygon form behind the Jolly Ben a kite, it needed a tail.
    No biggie.

I would still like to see, even if rejected, Jolly Ben with hair.

tonight i plan on fixing the font, putting in some hair, and showing it sans banners ... then a final decision can be made on which one(s) will be used.

alright, alright ... here we go, the jolly franklin with hair. i just cannot get it to look right. it's times like this when i wish i had my wacom tablet connected.

what do you guys think? hair or not? does this font work better? i think it does. and i added some horizontal lines to the bifocals to, you know, make them actually look like bifocals. i guess if i worked on it a little longer i COULD get the hair to work, but i'm not sure if it's even needed.

Ok, I am biased, but I really like it with the hair. I've been around Disney Pirates, Pitts Pirates, Tampa Bucs, Tampa Mutiny and even Oakland Raiders (long story) my whole life.
I think having a Jolly "Ben" that is special and unique just gives the logo and group something different.

I like ole Jolly Ben with the hair!

In any case, great job Dillon. Thanks!
