Check this shit out. Wow. https://www.dropbox.com/s/1zigfryj8df9xe2/Save The Crew_Stadium Proposal.pdf
I haven't stopped thinking about the walkway in front of second level seating since I saw it last night.
I like how this proposal specifically mentions the number of parking spaces available..........expert Troll Job right there
The stadium design actually looks fairly pragmatic, like a conscious effort to produce a nice stadium without exorbitant cost.
Depends...Populous has a pretty good track record of having finished product be pretty darn close to initial rendering. Of course, I can't open the link at work, so I can't see what this looks like, either.
The only thing that's fancy is the facade, so I could see that being simplified, but the rest seems pretty straightforward.
Why are some of the pages, specifically the "achievable dream" page, not visible here? It looks fantastic. But I'd love to hear it's plausible.
The land upon which it rests is VERY gettable. The one plot was already offered to PSV for free (they turned it down). Schottenstein owns that plot. Think the other is owned by Nationwide.
On my computer, i had to scroll right and left. Each panel is really two pages, like a kids book. Plus at least for me its so graphics intense that it took forever to load. As for doability ( I love inventing words) as noted above the parcel to the east is owned by the Schottenstein family, who built the Schottenstein Center at OSU among much other stuff. They had originally planned on some kind of fancy schmancy residential thing there but changed their mjnds and, at one point, literally did call up the Crew and offer to just give it to them. The Crew said no thanks. 20 acres smack on the the arena district. PSV told them to piss off. The other parcel is owned by Nationwide who also own Nationwide Arena a few blocks over. This has been the dream scenario for years, but Precourt really didnt want what amounts to literally perfect siting. Instead of backing hjm up for so long, Garber should have paid attention.
I think they'd better off with the training center in the suburbs somewhere with more room. That would free up the 15 acres or so for more parking. They could get maybe 2500 more spaces there.
Well, the roof certainly leaps out at you, and there are other similarities but overall there are some significant differences. Either way, it's not a bad model to want to pick for ideas.
I don't know the specifics of this deal and am not alleging anything or even saying there are similarities, but Populous often partners with local firms. For example, Audi Field was designed by the now dissolved Marshall Moya Design team for Populous. I don't know who Rogers Krajnak Architects is working with. Here is a nice post on their site. It's much easier to see the concept there.
I'm looking forward to the first time the Crew have a 2 pm kickoff and the CBJ have a 7 pm faceoff. I don't know if I can handle that much fun in a single day. Plus, if done right, the underground garage will help alleviate traffic concerns on days where only the hockey team is playing. Getting in and out on CBJ gamedays is already relatively easy. An additional 1,200 (or whatever) spots would make it a breeze. The new stadium would hold about 4.5 K more seats than Nationwide, though, so I'd be interested in seeing what traffic looks like on a matchday where the place is sold out. Small price to pay, though. I hope this happens.
I'd like to see the training facility in the suburbs with that site used for additional parking. The Crew can't really ask the Clipper or BlueJackets not to play home matches on Saturday nights in March-May and October. There will also sometimes be concerts at LiveNation. An important part of the proposal is a pedestrian/bike bridge across the Scioto to add access from the west.
I thought I had read that it was Populous who had done the STC stadium design. My mistake. The definitely "borrowed" a lot of design elements. Like how the rows in the bowl increase as you wrap around the stadium, raising the roof level. Putting the boxes in the corner of the stadium. I'm not criticizing, per se. But I did think I was looking at a rendering of Children's Mercy Park when I clicked on the link.
Congrats, Bill -- you inspired a blog post: https://rantingsoccerdad.com/2018/08/09/comparing-the-crew-proposals-spoiler-alert-columbus-wins/
