This is a tremendous book. What Meredith does here, condensing the entire continent's post-independence history (and I do mean the entire continent, from Egypt to South Africa, from Ghana to Kenya, and everything in between) into a manageable and amazingly readable 700 pages, is nothing short of phenomenal. If you're at all interested in contemporary Africa or African politics, this is a must read.
