So...Is the revs' logo now considered "Classic"?

    Kidding, Kidding!
It got me thinking today after the Fire announced their new logo that the Revs' are the last man standing with the old flag crest. Listening to J Davis on Sirius today he was talking about teams not letting things become iconic with a team and he passed right over the Revs'. Not to get into this all over again but, have we gone past the point (besides a new stadium launch heh heh) where the Revs' would get rid of the flag?

Which will happen when the Patriots decide that Gillette is "obsolete" and doesn't have enough lug-jury suites. Only then will the Revs play a home league game somewhere other than Gillette.

Seriously, at what point does "old" become "retro-chic?" Once you let the hipsters decide what is cool, then all bets are off. I mean Pabst Blue Ribbon? Really?

My grandparents' house was built in the early '60s. The kitchen is in that pale teal color that was trendy at the time, and some of the other features are original. A Real Estate agent said how much she loved the "retro" style, but the truth of the matter is that it was just never updated. We've gone full-circle and now it seems a lot cooler than if it was updated in the mid-90s, a look that would be pretty outdated by now.

As for sports teams never, ever updating their look, even the "throwback" designs they crank out are modern designs in the old style, and are not the same as what was the design back in the day. The exception is baseball teams like the Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers and Giants, those uniforms haven't changed at all in probably 70 years (except for the LA/SF hats and the brief time in the 70s when the Sox wore red hats). Those are basically the same uniforms Ted Williams, Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson and Willie Mays wore.

The Revs do need to update their logo to more of a crest/badge design. For no other reason than it fails the graphic design 101 test of not being suitable on a non-white background, unless you use that clunky white outline, which looks terrible. There have been a lot of pretty good designs put forth over the years, and most of them would be far better than the Kraft grandkids design from 1995.

The Red Sox have changed the uniform. I'm sad for Yaz, having had to play in double-knit pajamas.

Yeah, that was only for a few years in the mid-70s, which was probably the worst era for baseball uniforms. Remember the Padres' "taco" look or the Astros who were described as a "Hawaiian softball team?" I think it was 1979 when the Sox went back to the "classic" uniform that they had been wearing since the 1930s

Padres and Houston unis sucked in the 70's but the 80's brought us the "Human Blood Clot" look, and the White Sox uni's with shorts.

Yep, the "Hawaiian Softball Team." The Brewers weren't too drastic in the context of the times. Lots of teams wore sky blue instead of gray on the road, and the stripes were common among almost all the teams. The MB logo with the glove and ball was actually kind of clever.

But getting back on topic, I know many of us are saying we want the Revs to redesign the logo, but given what some teams have done recently and the absolute gobbledegook explanations given for why the new 5-sided pentagon is such an "exciting, vibrant new look that captures the essence and spirit of the six-state region, (while mysteriously leaving out one state, and since we don't know which), providing infinite intrigue that will keep the region talking about it for decades to come," we might want to be careful for what we wish for.

Or we can go with the rivets, since they worked so well last time!

The Rev's logo was awful in the beginning. It was awful halfway to now. It is awful now. It will be awful half way to eternity. For another viewpoint it's like Elvis. Still dead! Seriously though, to me it will always be associated with a legacy of very bad football. Arena's arrival seems to herald a new and successful beginning. I'd say a new, professionally designed logo, would be more than appropriate going forward.

if it's anywhere near as terrible as the fire re-brand, then lets keep it.
I think it means something that the REVOLUTION is the only team to not rebrand. maybe we focus on less boring jerseys off our brand.

Sometimes I feel our logo looks goofy and silly and out-of-step with the rest of the league and other times I feel it looks unique, dignified, classic and original -especial as regards to the original 10.

So, weirdly, I don't have a strong opinion about it and to me it's a dilemma. That said, I'm inclined to say, keep it for another decade or so to see how it shows by then. Maybe there is something to hang on to -in terms of tradition- that can be uniquely ours. We could possibly appear like the authentic and original MLS team when there is sufficient nostalgia some day. We are the only team to not update or re-brand our logo. Maybe double down and embrace that?

Not to get off the track, but the new Fire re-brand is truly awful. What the hell were they thinking????
