Want to give the guy the benefit of the doubt, but his decisions do him no favors. And we haven't been playing well to boot either. But as previously stated it's looking like Stewart has missed a golden opportunity with this appointment, and that is really disappointing.
Guedes is one of those guys that you can tell has tons of talent and you wait for him to do something with it but he never does.
Another selection choice that is somewhat perplexing for me when it comes to Portugal, is the omission of Ricardo Pereira at RB. Semedo is nothing special and has failed to live up to expectations (so far at least). Don't know how good Cancelo really is, but the fact that Juve are apparently ready to sell him, does not help his cause. Pereira on the other hand looked very good this season with Leicester and surely would provide more than what we've seen from Semedo this week. Another Leicester player I'd pick up for United without much hesitation.
this is what happens when only 1/3 of your attackers is decent to good and 0/3 do anything on the night. yikes...
FT: 1-0, Portugal win the inaugural edition of the Nations League. And I guess that is why Santos will stick around just a bit longer. They could be so much fun to watch with the talent available on hand at the offensive end, but they get the results with Santos: 2 titles in 3yrs now. For their part, Holland need to find real options in a few vital spots (GK, CF and a CM partner to de Jong) in order to be a real force again on the international scene.
all the problems still there. when de Roon is a starting mid and Babel is a starting forward well.. well deserved Portugal. further cementing of CR7's legacy
Bernardo Silva for Portugal in the UEFA Nations League:• Most chances created (16)• Most take-ons (15)• Most tackles (11)• Most assists (2)MVP pic.twitter.com/pgbsYHTP2n— Squawka (@Squawka) June 9, 2019 Pretty incredible from B. Silva. Just continuing to show the great form he's shown this season with City. Deserving of the Player of the Tournament award.
Still resentful over the fact he didn't play for Benfica and Monaco took him directly from the B-team. We have a pretty good group of players again, the best since 2004/2006. Santoa just needs to actually play proper footy and we will be up there as a top team for a while. Easier said then done though, the second we scored he turtled us..luckily Rafa brought some life back to the game..another player who improved a lot this season. The Dutch finally have a solid centreback pairing again, but now they severely lack a striker and clinical winger like the battles we had with them in 2004/2006...even 2012
That is absolutely savage. 💀 https://t.co/HljvvXSdMj— Football Tweet ⚽ (@Football__Tweet) June 9, 2019
Ferland Mendy, who did play for France this weekend, is said to be next on deck this coming week. I guess that will leave Real with the whole summer to ship some of their deadwood out and perhaps try to work on the Pogba deal. Including Mendy who should cost around $56mil, Real's spending will clock at $346mil so far. Say what you will but it must be nice to operate on that level (and we could if we cared to).
United and City go head to head over... Slabhead? https://www.skysports.com/football/...hester-city-and-manchester-united-this-summer Clearly a case where I'd love nothing more for the guy to choose City over us. As previously mentioned, if we were to miss out on our top CB targets, I'd be willing to entertain the thought of Maguire but not at the price Leicester are sure to ask for him. Pity that Skriniar is also pretty much out of play for us as well. Not seen enough of Dias to know if he'd be the right solution for us. Jimenez from Atleti is someone I'd love to take a crack at, but with Godin gone, not sure Atleti will make it easy. But his release clause I believe in the 60s (mil) and if we could convince him, he'd be a very nice addition in defense.
As much as we dont want it to be true, it seems like scouting identified De Ligt and Kouibaly as our CB options with Maguire as the fallback. De Ligt isnt choosing us (and who can blame him) and Koulibaly would cost unreasonable money. So its going to end up being Maguire. The scary thing would be if he does choose City because then theres a good chance we either stay with what we have (disaster) or overpay for a guy the scouting department isnt crazy about (also high chance of disaster).
Outside of de Ligt, Koulibaly, Skriniar and Gimenez, the only CBs I would be interested in are the RBL guys: Konate and Upamecano. They're young and not yet on the level of the other 4 but they do have great promise to potentially become top guys in the future. RBL's defense was solid, especially in the 2nd half of the season and one of those guys could be worth looking into. But as much as it would not be ideal, I'd almost rather we stay put at CB (plus Tuanzebe) and wait for a real opportunity to present itself, over getting a guy like Maguire or another mediocre, low upside player who would cost a high amount of money.
Spain hammered Sweden comfortably, 3-0 (no Lindelöf for Sweden though). Also worth noting the difference between Luis Enrique and Ole in terms of how to handle Dave: that is the 2nd game in a row that Kepa has started in goal. Pretty sure that Dave will regain his place eventually, but he hasn't shown good form at the tail end of the season, so someone else is called up in his place (not that Kepa is a better keeper, not even close at this juncture). It might not have made any difference in the end for us, but Ole should have taken Dave out of the line of fire in our final run of games and gone with Romero.
