Nobody was buying Koulibaly this summer. ADL slapped 150m price tag on a 28 year old defender and Koulibaly himself said he wasn't ready to leave Napoli.

Kouli is good, but he's not 2x cost of Maguire good. Not to mention he would have to adjust to England - and there's never a guarantee that a CB will look as good in England as they do in Italy.

Buying Alderweireld to play in front of Lindelof would have been the dumbest shit - and indicative that we have no footballing plan. Lindelof at 25 > TA at 25.

It's apparent that we aren't building to win right now, so why sacrifice the development that will come good in 2-3 seasons for an extra 3-5pts this year? That's madness and the kind of thinking that put us in this spot.

Makes you wonder what happened there: had an auspicious enough start to his United career. And the hope was that he'd go from strength to strength as time went on
He never was an 80mil CB to begin with, but he's really not looking like anything remotely special right now. Let's hope he can find some measure of form sooner rather than later. Bc he simply is not good enough.

Leicester won't give us a refund on Maguire but perhaps we can work an exchange and get Soyuncu from them...
They must laughing their arses off at how they got us to pay all that money on that guy. Since we're stuck with him, really hoping that in time, this all turns out the same way it did with Vidic.
Hopeful though more than anything else (Vidic at least had legit reasons for his slow start that Maguire simply doesn't have) but that's all we have right now: hope...

He wouldn't be my choice for United MVP this season (Fred is the guy for me). Still believe that he was overpriced at 80mil, but to be fair to him, he has grown in stature (and quality) as the season went along and has turned into a solid signing.
The team looked good prior to the enforced interruption of the season, with the backline as a whole looking pretty settled and a solid unit. As such Maguire surely deserves his share of the plaudits.
Fingers crossed, his latter displays will become the norm going forward and would be happy enough he continues on proving me wrong about him. Thought it also was an odd choice from Ole to make him skip, but surprisingly enough, he's embraced and grown into the job.
And while he's not likely to reach van Dijk's level, let's hope he can go from strength to strength as the anchor of our backline.

Regardless of how I fee about him (inflated valuation, still too inconsistent for my liking as a CB1), that showed guts right there (on top of being genuine leadership material).
Ironically, if I remember correctly, that is when he was at his most effective also this season. Go figure...

still the worst player this season for me.

don't give a shxt about how well he can pass a ball or carry it a few yards. try keeping it out of the net first. how he's ended up as captain and the bedrock of the defence is beyond me.

he doesn't even score goals à la Vermaelen to somewhat balance things out

Our biggest problem was that we needed a centre back at a time when we had the least pull. He's a £40-50m CB that has cost us double because we needed someone desperately and couldn't attract better.

He was unbelievably slow and cumbersome with the ball yesterday. He and Matic were double Schweining. At least Maguire has great defensive awareness, right?

at minimum relieve him of the armband.

one of my biggest gripes with Solskjær is he's persisted with this clown who has ZERO leadership qualities.

given he played under the best captain this league has ever seen it is hugely disappointing.

especially with Bruno here. i'd even take Rashford over him

Mixed season for sure, but just having a CB who isn't perma-crocked is a nice change :)

Not an uber fan of his (and certainly not what we paid for him). But what's done is done and we know full well he's not going anywhere anyhow.
Lots of up and downs from him this season but his peaks have given me hope that with the right partner, we still could have a top notch CB partnership and backline as a whole. Lindelof is good (as he's shown again with his performance today) but the problem is the he and Mag are too similar.
Get an athletic, quick (thinking and moving) player next to either one of Maguire (or Lindelof for that matter) and we should see them flourish.

For some context, we were 54 goals against last season.

With Maguire (& AWB) coming in we are 36 against this

    Compare 35 City, 33 ‘pool, 54 Chelsea.
