Should we invite countries from other confederations in the Gold Cup as in the past? That's a big and interesting question! Remember we had teams such like Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia and even teams like South Africa and South Korea. I think that if we move to 16 teams, we will invite teams from other confederations. Consider the case of South America. The Copa America often invites the United States and Mexico and it would seem that Agentina hosting the Copa America in 2011, intends to invite Japan. As an example we can have a competition like that : Group A Group B Group C Group D USA Canada Costa-Rica Mexico Colombia Ecuador Peru Chile Honduras Guatemala El Salvador Panama Jamaica Guadeloupe Trinidad and Tobago Cuba For now, we can invite ourselves to the countries of South America. Now everything depends on the CONCACAF's decision!
Yeah, most team in the region are not exposed to better teams. If they are not exposed to teams from other confederations they'll never grow. Mexico has grown alot since it started participating in Copa america 1993
Only CONCACAF teams! I agree! And that's why i say only 12 teams in Gold Cup for not devaluing this competition.
I'll say no, only teams from Concacaf. The ones that have come to play in the Conca, have not done nothing so y invite them. They just going to bring bench warmers and wont help with our competition. Look at conmebol, they dont invite the Concacaf, only Mexico so y invite them in our region.
Conmebol has invited Costa Rica and USA in the past. The USA is too crappy and proved undeserving, so they didn't get invited again, but Mexico is still a regular in the tournament. that is reason enough to invite South American teams.
Why do you always try to be so combative on your posts? You could've said the same thing with a better choice for words and came out sounding far more objective (which I am assuming is probably not your goal?).
MetroChile wat do u think about the topic. To me i just think that the South American teams that played in the past Gold Cups, really havent done nothing cause they bring bench warmers. Like Ecuador, Colombia n Brazil. I mean if they would bring like 5 or 8 good players then i'll say hell yea, that will only improve our competition, but if they bring bench warmers n dont perform better than our teams it just doesnt make sense.
I think personally the GC should be expanded to 16 teams but only for teams from CONCACAF (Cuba, TnT and Guate. being 3 of the 4). I don't argue that bringing in Brazil's A team or Colombia's A team would make the competition better: what I would be worried about, though, is either one of these teams (or any invitee, for that matter) winning the competition. That would not look good/right.
You're right it wouldnt look good, but like in South America now, when Mexican teams advances to the final of a Copa Libertadores, that dont look good in some of the South American teams either but then again, these Mexican teams have lot of money so they really have good players something that the other Concacaf teams that lack of $$$ to put up a good team together.
Your example isn't the best as club football and national team football are different in this context. We are not talking about club football where the team who has the most money gets the best players. We all know that CONMEBOL is superior to CONCACAF.So to have teams from CONMEBOL participating in our tournaments increases their chances of winning the title of our region. So eventough Mexican clubs play in the Copa Libertadores, they are still clubs from a weaker region playing in a overall stronger tourney and not the other way around.
where would the 4 extra teams come from? central america already qualifies 5 of it's 7 countries.. and carib qualifies 4.. so do we throw in 4 more carib teams??? or throw in the 2 remaining C.A. teams and 2 from carib..
Actually,I wouldn't mind seeing other countries outside of concacaf play in the gold cup.It would make things more interesting.
well Soccerfever, If all Conmebol select teams are so superior why havent they won a Gold Cup in the Concacaf when they were invited. Note i said Select teams and dont give the excuse that they didnt have all of their famous players. If thats the case they shouldnt be invited to the Concacaf Gold Cup, im sure most of you agree.
is not panama a conmebol team and if so then what they was doing in the goal cup,i say only teams from concacaf should be in the goal cup, why, because they don't invite no teams from concacaf to conmebol, hay why don't we do this and make very body happy why don't we start a new tournament that play every 2 or 3 year concacaf teams vs conmebol teams, yeah we will still have the goal cup tournament,i think is will be good we will not only have the goal cup to look forward to we will also have is other tournament to look forward to concacaf teams vs conmebol, but we will need a name for is new tournament.
Well Lucky let me answer the first one, Panama is part of Central America, i can talk bout history n how they got their independence from Colombia but thats another topic. I like ur idea, bout having the 3 teams from Concacaf playing the winners of Copa America.
You want proof that CONMEBOL is much superior than CONCACAF on the international stage?Let's take the results from the most recent encounters at meaningful tournaments. Here we go! World Cup 2006 Ecuador 3 Costa Rica 0 Both teams used their first squads, and Ecuador dominated and crushed the Ticos. Both teams playing their second match and Costa Rica needed a victory to stay alive. They lost the match and also that lost was the only match that they lost by a 3 goal margin at the 2006 finals. Paraguay 2 Trinidad & Tobago 0 Paraguay was already eliminated having lost to both England and Sweden 1-0 each matches.T&T had only lost to England 2-0 and needed to win this one and score a few goals(plus they needed Sweden to lose their match against England). What happened next?T&T lost 2-0 to a team that was already eliminated in a match that they needed to win. Argentina 2 Mexico 1 Argentina defeated Mexico narrowly.Mexico even took the lead through Rafa Marquez early on.Argentina equalized, match went to extratime and Maxi Rodriguez scored probably the best goal at that World Cup to eliminate Mexico.Mexico was the only team that saved CONCACAF's behind at the finals as they made it past the group stage a gave a fight before going down to the Argentines. Copa America 2007 Paraguay 3 United States 1 Argentina 4 United States 1 Colombia 2 United States 0 Do I need to say more? These results speak for themselves! still Copa America 2007 Mexico 2 Brazil 0 Mexico 2 Ecuador 1 Mexico 0 Chile 0 Mexico advanced with good performances against Brazil and Ecuador that resulted in victories and a scorless draw against Chile. Copa America 2007 QF Mexico 6 Paraguay 0 Very good result for El Tri as they crushed Paraguay... Copa America 2007 Semis Argentina 3 Mexico 0 Mexico crashed out after a losing by 3 goals to Argentina. As you can see, other than Mexico, there are no CONCACAF teams in recent years as good against CONMEBOL opposition. So overall and as I pointed earlier in the thread,CONMEBOL is superior to CONCACAF. I'm sorry but this is an important fact and no excuse.CONMEBOL teams have more depth than CONCACAF teams, this is no secret. They shouldn't be invited period. We need teams from the CONCACAF region to grow,so the priority should be within CONCACAF.Do You agree?
Well reading that long essay of yours i only agree with the last part, that said, you def. went off the topic which is "Should we invite other countries to the Gold Cup" Not if Conmebol is more superior than Concacaf. I would of wish if you would of put the facts about the Conmebol teams that have played in the Gold Cup that would of been facts dont you agree. But lets not make this an ongoing topic. We both agree that Conmebol teams should not be invited to the Gold Cup period. Lets move on.
