Instead of waiting to be invited by CONMEBOL to participate in the Copa America, do you think they should automatically participate? Mexico and Costa Rica both play quality football, but they play in a federation where 90% of their opponents are not up to their standards. Playing in the Copa America would only benefit Mexican and Costa Rican football since they would then play against South American opponents at their level, if not more or less. I trust some of you would have watched the recent electrifying match between Mexico and Chile where they both scored 3 goals each?
Switch up depending on who is the best team of CONCACAF & who is the 2nd after their World Cup rankings
Mexico and Costa Rica have always been the best Latin American countries outside of South America, but playing against weak Caribbean and Central American sides (besides Honduras) won't help them develop as much as they should and that's not fair. They'd only get even better by playing against other teams who can actually go toe to toe with them. I'm reluctant to include Honduras, seeing as they're not as good as Mexico or Costa Rica, and I wouldn't include USA since they're not a Latin American country.
No one in CONCACAF has enough depth to realistically compete in a strong Copa America with their second team. I'd like to see CONCACAF and CONMEBOL combined anyway. The travel wouldn't be that bad, and it'd be better for the top CONCACAF teams. If USA and Mexico can't qualify for the WC with 9-10 spots up for grabs, they don't deserve to play in the WC.
If they bring their A team then Mexico should compete, even the USA. Two worst teams this Copa America, surprise, from Concacaf.
Not even going to defend Jamaica, I don't even know why CONMEBOL thought they'd be strong competitors. I had no expectation of Jamaica making it far in this competition. As for Mexico, did you watch any of their games? They may have been eliminated, but they didn't go down without a fight, especially against their strongest opponent Chile.
1 win doesnt mean anything. Every country in Concacaf would eventually get a victory against conmebol.
They were in our group, of course I saw their games. Jamaica didn´t go down without a fight either, did you see their games? But in the end, they were the first ones out, followed by Jamaica.
Your daily reminder that unlike CR, Honduras placed 3rd in Copa America 01 on short notice eliminating Ronaldos Brazil in Quarters in route to Semis where we lost to hosts Colombia. #history
Mexico is basically a permanent participant, CONMEBOL wouldn't dare to not invite us(Mexico), and the money that comes along. As for the the other participants, I guess Costa Rica is a good choice. Honestly, it's pretty Mickey Mouse to invite a different country every edition.
The Gold cup is Mickey Mouse as it gets, with its rigged grouping, and never changing host.Last time I checked the Euro doesn't invite different teams every edition.
Last I checked, NO ONE invites teams except Copa America. Every other tournament requires teams to actually play and qualify for it!
You can thank the CONCACAF/Traffic Sports marriage for why the Gold Cup is played in the U.S. every year (hasn't always been, but currently is). I doubt the USSF says no to whatever money/benefit it gets out of the deal.
I would love for Mexico AND the USA to be permament members of Copa Ameroca, but with their A team and only that.
