in a hypothetical scenario that USA and Mexico join Conmebol qualifiers you have to consider how much they would improve with the tougher opposition

look at Ecuador and Venezuela...go back to the 70s and before and how many would have thought that Ecuador would have made more than 1 world cup in the future

Venezuela were terrible in the 90s they have made huge strides

imagine what competition would do to a country like the States with the resources they have...obviously they would struggle to qualify to begin with (joinging the other 4/5 teams that scrap for the playoff spots) but give them a few cycles and they might surprise

Ecuador, and Paraguay are capable of a draw even a win if this was world cup qualifying if you dont think so then we'll agree to disagree. Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Brazil are the half which will take an easy 3. Ecuador arent a road team but we can sure get those draws.

Its extremely hard to play in La Paz, its at 9000 feet altitude, or something like that. Argentina, that regulary beats Bolivia outside of La Paz, 5-0, 7-0, 3-0 you name it, often barely ties in La Paz, or can scratch a 1-0 and even got destroyed 6-0.

Even the USA B-squad did better against Argentina in the 2007 Copa America. And that was on neutral ground.

What are you on about? You make all these blanket statements about how great Conmebol and therefore Peru are and how sucky and irrelevant the USA is, but how about head to head USA v Peru?

    http://www.11v11.com/teams/usa/tab/opposingTeams/opposition/Peru/

How about World Cup ?- oh right Peru have not even been in it since 1982 - talk about irrelevant.

My point isn't to belittle Peru, but to inquire why are you here badmouthing the USA?

You just proved my point - we can beat the USA in Lima but not in the US.

And you're all making me sound like a broken record. There is a big difference qualifying with Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Uruguay than with Guatemala, Cuba, Jamaica, Panama and Mexico.

    Interesting enough,.
    Qualifying to WC
    For conmebol
    From 1998 - 2014

    Argentina 5
    Brazil 5
    Paraguay 4
    Ecuador 3
    Chile 3
    Colombia 2

& Uruguay has not been able to qualify directly since 1990,
But through playoffs have been able to make 3 appearances since 98

While adding USA & Mexico just
    Think about this a lil...

Mexico and USA are so blessed to exist in CONCACAF. It allows them to qualify for every World Cup and it gives each country about a 50% chance to win the Gold Cup and qualify to Confederations Cup. This allows a lot of opportunities to build experience, to build the resume and to build confidence.

The USA would have close to 25% chance to qualify out of CONMEBOL which would send it into the global obscurity similar to Bolivia or Peru where your NT players have a harder time being noticed by the big leagues and it's harder to maintain confidence within the team and confederation. 25% means maybe one World Cup every 16 years which means that many players will go an entire career without experiencing that stage.

In UEFA I think the US would have maybe 33% chance of qualifying. Even in Africa I don't see the odds much better than 50%. Yes the US had better results than African teams in tournaments, but qualifying out of Africa is not the same as playing in a tournament. They don't have any great teams, but they have many good teams meaning that almost every game is difficult. Especially on the road where you have to deal with hostile crowds, difficult climate, poor playing surfaces, poor facilities etc ...

The US can barely maintain media interest in the team as it is even though they qualify for every major tournament. Imagine if that media and fanbase was faced with a 25-50% success rate. Soccer would be 20 years behind of where it is today.

There are too many profits involved with being an isolated region where there is very little competition. I think the best thing that could happen to north Americans is to join conmebol in qualifiers but money is what makes this world go round not logical thinking
