Gazzetta dello Sport chose at the end of 1987 the best Juventus 11 all-time players based on a survey that included managers, journalists, politicians, players, directors and people from show business.
This is absolutely fascinating. For a long time I’ve been looking to understand a popular claim in Britain that John Charles had been voted as the greatest foreigner in the history of Juventus. This poll isn’t exactly saying that but I can understand how it could be interpreted that way.
At this point Van Basten has virtually said goodbye to the season, he’ll need surgery and won’t be back until March of 1988 (we are currently in November 1987).
Scifo's early form seems to be regarded as 'variable' as opposed to consistently 'average' I noticed, as some good to very good ratings are mixed in with lower ones (sometimes some publications disagreeing on how low). Interesting, given the overall narrative eventually that his Inter spell was 'disappointing' or even a 'failure' or whatever. Maybe he struggles more as the season goes on, although of course his current overall average is not really outstanding. He is high up in the Bravo award list so far too, and was MOTM in the latest European game. Gullit has surely made the better start even so (though pre-season predictions were leaning that way anyway). I haven't been keeping close track of things in order to pick out some candidates for potential 1987 calendar year averages that might be impressive at the moment, but feel free to prompt me on that score. Gullit wasn't in Italy for the first half of the year anyway of course.
Yeah, unfortunately for Scifo his reputation takes a nosedive as the season progresses. He has along with Ian Rush the unfortunate record as one of the worst top 3 in the final end to “Hit Parade” and his average grades are at below the 6,00 mark when all is done. Will let you know when the calendar year concludes.
