There is a great conversation going on in the looking forward thread, and Falvo's informative posts made it clear it is time to put up the 2020 edition of this thread. I created a new category for out of contract players. With the waiver draft coming it is possible that Cummings could take a pay cut and stay, but of course Espinoza is the out of contract player we need. I also image many of the HG's will get loaned out.

We all know what these players bring and I for one am not too excited about the roster at this point.

I hope help arrives soon but I'm not all that optimistic of Tuesday's Re-Entry Draft, either!

absolutely no need for that many keepers. Hope we get rid of at least one of Tarbell or Bersano before the season starts, thats too valuable a roster space to waste on five keepers

I believe the transfer window opens Feb 12 and roster compliance day is Feb 28. That might be a shorter window than ever. But I suppose it's not hard to get into compliance if you're having a low turnover offseason.

Tanner Beason was signed before the draft, so he is going to be on senior roster. Christian Espinoza takes a senior slot, leaving just one.

What they need to fit in that 16-day window in February is a loan or signing of a centerback. I don't see how they start the season without that. You can't have Beason as your only centerback sub to start the season unless Jacob Akanyirige has become a dramatically matured player while with the U20s. He wasn't even playing as a CB with Reno.

Agreeing with OWN(yewu)ED, that we have too many keepers even if Ochoa can't "count" given his age. I think Tarbell is the wasted $ and surplus, even if JT is with the Olympic team for a chunk of time, and we should find a way to offload him. Vega or Eriksson should really have a green card by now. We should be looking for someone to do Jackson Yeuill's job when he's gone. I like Felipe as a player, but I'm worried about when Jackson goes, temporarily or permanently.

With the departures of Cummings, Affolter, and Ockford, they have to at least be signing one CB, right??

And who was the Quakes "Plan B" if they didn't land Alan Pulido, and when will they sign that player? How about going after Funes Mori? Lol imagine the Quakes signing a legit LigaMX player....

"It would have reportedly taken a $10 million transfer fee and an annual salary of $4 million to $5 million to land the 28-year-old Monterrey forward."

Rogelio Funes Mori was LA Galaxy's Plan B signing for Chicharito

I have followed Monterrey for over a decade, although by watching more than truly ever trying to follow all the ins and outs or rumors and speculation since my Spanish is so weak. But Funes Mori seems pretty key to the plans of Monterrey. I love the player, but I'm not so sure he was really available at that price. They have Vincent Jansen but I'm not at all sure they really would have seen him as able to take over for Funes Mori this season, enough they'd have let him go so easily. He is injury prone, which is the reason I could entertain the idea. But that's more the sort of thing someone who can follow all the press would really know.
I'm sort of skeptical on the Pizzaro rumors for the same reason. He may not have been entirely consistent last year, but when he's on his game, he really is key. Them selling Pabon, that I could have seen.

Maybe I'm crazy, but once the Quakes landed Almeyda, I've been prepared to believe they could well be in the running for a player like Pulido or Funes Mori or even Pizzaro. Not that they were/are. More that it would no longer shock me. Before Almeyda happened, yeah, such a signing would have shocked me.

We need to snag at least a couple of more players. I want another forward and a CB, and really want an upgrade for Magnus (which means that Magnus goes, giving us a roster spot and international slot).

We might need to trade someone to open a spot, and in that event, my money says that we trade Lima. (I wouldn’t do that, but it’s what I expect.)

Frankly, I wouldn't mind being able to keep Magnus, because he was very useful last year in Almeyda's system, but I do not think he's worth an Int. slot. We need to be working on getting him a green card.

We are thin at outside back, and he can play both sides. It would be stupid to trade him.

I agree completely, however, our magical coach does not rate Lima. Nick was struggling for minutes against Lopez last year. Nick is twice the player that Lopez is, but had trouble getting minutes against him. So what are we doing?

Were it my call, I’d play Nick at right back, where he belongs and I’d play TT for Magnus, and there would be much rejoicing.

    But it’s not my call.

And I have this terrible pain in all the diodes on my left side ...

We have some movement! So, I'm finally added Espinoza, added Beason who was pre-signed with MLS, created a spot for our unsigned draftees, added Oswaldo Alanís (welcome!), updated our rights, and removed Tom Fox.

We don't actually have any spots left, but we do have a number of youngsters that could be loaned to Reno for the season.

For this league, paying a backup GK $235k is a lot. After seeing him in 2018, I doubt he is improved that much. I'd go with JT Marcinkowski as a backup so he won't count against the salary cap.

We signed him to a new contract after 2018. He must have triggered a performance clause in his last contract. e.g. if he starts x number of games we have to re-sign him.

The Quakes can eat one contract per rules. If a player becomes available that the Quakes want, this is the contract to buy out.

A lot of what happens may depend on that issue brought up by our main Reno contributor on will Almeyda be willing to really fully loan players to Reno vs wanting them to train with the Quakes always so he knows more directly who they are and how they are doing...which then just makes things untenable for Russell to field a cohesive team with loans that aren't really loans.

Tarbell's slot though is indeed problematic if they want a senior roster slot midseason any time from here on out, including to sign a DP in the summer. But I agree, I could see them eating Tarbell's contract. It's a cheaper buy out than some others they've done.

Someone mentioned on one of the threads that he had heard talk of Reno and SJ practicing together 3 days a week. Who knows if this is true or not. This would be a good solution to the practice issues from previous seasons, if true. Ian appears to be all in right now as he puts together his team for 2020. Lots of turnover of key players this season.

Tarbell can definitely be sold to someone else as far as we are concerned over here, also. Partida has signed with us this season.

I think we could probably trade Tarbell to another team. Maybe we have to eat some of his salary, but he’s been a decent ‘keeper in the past, and he can be again.

On the SJ/Reno thing, I think the real problem is that Ian doesn’t play Almeydaball. That’s going to be a problem as some point. So, it’s possible that we end our relationship with Reno altogether and Ian stays there. OR, it’s possible that Ian starts coaching and playing Almeydaball. It seems problematic to have guys traveling back and forth between Reno and SJ twice a week every week. That’s going to wear on players eventually.

I don’t know what the solution is, I’m just trying to think it through.

I think Ian will be trying to coach Almeydaball. The new signees all seem to be considered pacy for their positions, very strong in them and like to play defense.

I think Almeydaball and Ian's philosophies can be melded together. They both want defense to start the offense and to be aggressive in getting the ball back.
