Yep I knew someone was going to have to head home. Nice catch. I guess the TAM trade with the Crew might also be related to Rios because of the timing.

I suppose that means Cummings starts in Vancouver?

Kashia getting a green card would open up an International Roster slot (we only need one opened), but Ockford was Supplemental Roster not Senior Roster, so do we have enough room on the Senior Roster for both new additions?

    https://www.mlssoccer.com/rosters/2019/san-jose-earthquakes

All 20 are occupied, so two players would have to be moved:

    Senior Roster (Spots 1-20)
    1 Affolter, Francois
    2 Bersano, Matt
    3 Bersano, Matt
    4 Calvillo, Eric
    5 Cummings, Harold
    6 Eriksson, Magnus
    7 Espinoza, Cristian
    8 Felipe, Luis
    9 Godoy, Anibal
    10 Hoesen, Danny
    11 Judson
    12 Jungwirth, Florian
    13 Kashia, Guram
    14 Lima, Nick
    15 Lopez, Marcos
    16 Salinas, Shea
    17 Tarbell, Andrew
    18 Vako
    19 Vega, Daniel
    20 Wondolowski, Chris

-Looks like the made an error in listing Bersano twice, so only one spot needs to be opened up.
-Having three goalkeepers on the Senior Roster is ridiculous (with JT on the Reserve Roster) so maybe a move is made there, or maybe Calvillo or Felipe can be shifted around...

Could the TAM the Quakes traded Columbus for be used to buy down a player from senior to supplemental spot? There has to be a reason the Quakes made that trade. Why was Ockford supplemental? His low salary?

TAM can only be used on players who are above a certain salary, to buy them down from DP level. It's not like if we used TAM on Vako or Wondo, that would move either to the Supplemental Roster. I'm guessing one of the two new guys is just above DP level and will be bought down?

I have no idea what any of this means.....We give them $150k and get $110k.

Oh wow this makes a lot of sense! :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Quakes, Crew swap TAM for GAM

Well, the biggest thing is that we can only use the TAM we got this year on signings. TAM is mainly involved in big signings (over the regular salary max), and as far as I can tell can be used to sign DPs and bring down current players salaries so that they are no longer classified as DPs. We have done this last one with Wondo before. Here is the MLS page on TAM.

What we lose is next year's GAM, so we pay for it in the 2020 season. GAM is the original type of allocation money used before the DP rule, is mainly used to keep players under the cap through signing or resigning, and to allow an individual player's salary to exceed the maximum by as much as 150k. Here in the MLS page on GAM.

So this year we can make a big signing over the cap including a DP, or buy down one DP to make two DP slots open. Next year we have less flexibility in the cap with our regular budget players.

On a different note I just got back into the country and will edit the roster soon.

The Quakes are only using 2 DP slots now anyway. Why would they need to buy one down for Rios? I can see them being over the cap limit but they are allowed to have another DP player. Are the Quakes considering buying Espinoza and making him a DP?

They might not have 500k in cap space available (which you would need for a DP).

This all seems more like GM Jesse Fioranelli's job; in knowing, making the deals, and explaining to and working with the wishes of a coach.

Of course they do and they should because that is their job and that is why they are paid. Another reason why they don't need to and probably don't know what TAM, or GAM is.

Yeah, only 2 reasons I can see them needing TAM. Say they only have room in the salary cap for a 350k offer to Rios. He says no, wants 500k instead. Okay, Quakes agree to 500k (which makes him DP) but they buy down his salary to 350k cap hit.

If that is not why the Quakes bought the TAM than that means the Quakes are paying Rios enough to be considered a DP and they have plans for ANOTHER DP signing. They would use the TAM to buy either Rios, Wondo or the new player down below the DP threshold.

Since Almeyda has stated no one else besides possibly Rios is coming, you have to speculate that maybe a rostered player is going to become a DP. To me that means it’s 90% likely it’s Espinoza.

Okay, getting us prepared for our final signings. Since the last update new salary figures have come out, Jyri Nieminen left, we signed Carlos Fierro, we send Ockford to Nashville on loan, and everyone's favorite move, TAM for Gam with C-Bus.

Thank you for compiling this. I do have a question. MLS Soccer dot com supposedly has the official MLS roster and they show different player slots, such as Thompson on supplemental while you show him on reserve.

    https://www.mlssoccer.com/rosters/2019/san-jose-earthquakes

They have an obvious error with Bersano listed twice and no Fierro on there.

Reason I’m asking about your data is you seem to show an empty spot on the senior roster that might be used by signing Andres Rios. MLS does not show that because Ockford left when he was in a supplemental slot (which Rios will not be eligible for). Is the MLS Soccer dot com roster incorrect?

I can understand that we don't get details on how TAM and GAM are spent on players and how close we are to the salary cap.

But the fact we don't have a reliable roster is crazy. We should be able to look at the roster on either the mls page or the quakes page and know for certain if Ockford was on the supplemental or senior roster.

Right now i'm going to assume ockford trade free'd up a senior roster spot only because that's the reason it would have made sense to loan him out. We didn't get money for him and we are an injury or two away from needing him.

I think the only reason we keep this thread around is that MLS sucks at giving us accurate information, though as pointed out in last year's thread this is better than it has been in the past. The roster page you have cited and the sjearthquakes.com roster page are reasonably good sources, but they often lag or have silly typos. I think we have one Salary Budget Roster slot open since the typo of having Bersano twice did not seem to eliminate another name. I think Okford's Supplemental slot is now open since he is officially on loan. In the past loans have taken players completely off of our roster.

Who goes in which off-budget roster category does not seem to matter much, but I am updating to the official designation by the league for accuracy. It seems to me that Luis Felipe could easily be moved into Okford's now open Supplemental Roster spot, so I think we have room for two Salary Budget Roster signings.

The bigger data issue is the one that Scott Rohde points out. There is no salary cap transparency, and little to no salary (union only), partial transfer/signing/trade information given, and not TAM/GAM accounting. It makes our cap situation complete conjecture, but at lease having the salary figures gives us the ability to make educated guesses.

It's got to be in the conversation, I'm sure, which would explain the need to get TAM now. And it's hard to imagine Espinoza not earning a DP contract at this point, if he could be signed. Plus, the Quakes would still need to pay a transfer fee for him, right?

For sure, he won’t come on a free. The TAM has to be used this year so why did we buy it?

I would guess to keep either Fierro or Rios from earning more than the max allowed salary, and thus, taking up the third DP slot.

Will 150k buy down Wondo below DP threshold? We got a specific amount for a reason.
