Even though he's technical director and I don't think it falls under that job, but I thought (can't remember where I read it) th Chris Leitch was helping JF with the crazy mls rules....
I don't think the rules are so arcane that Jesse could not come up to speed on them, and of course he would be able to bounce things off of Leitch. What concerns me about Jesse is not his ability to understand roster rules, it's - how much does he really understand and value the MLS domestic player? His strength is in European players, and so we've had a bunch of Euro signings. And that's fine, but due to the limit in international slots, you also have to be able to make smart moves for domestic MLS players - intra-league trades and things like that. Other than the HG signing and USL promotions, which are entirely inward-looking, I don't know that Jesse has made a single deal for an MLS domestic player. Or am I forgetting something? To me that suggests that maybe he doesn't really value the MLS domestic player. Dom and Doyle were kind of the opposite. They made lots of intra-MLS deals, and even pulled guys off the MLS scrap heap (Nyassi, Wynne, etc.). I would go so far to say that at one point, Dom was a master at composing his roster with MLS spare parts. I'm thinking specifically of 2005. Chung, Rico Clark, Brad Davis, Kelly Gray, A. Moreno, Wade Barrett, Danny Califf - all MLS veteran players (except for Rico who was still a fairly young MLS player, and yes, Barrett and Califf were returning from international play).
Jesus, people. Yeah, there are a bunch of rules, but it’s not rocket science. There is an MLS administrative guide provided to all teams that is comprehensive and takes up a lot less shelf space than volume one of the tax code...
Really good points and questions here. JF did essentially sell Bingham and earlier Shaun Francis (smaller deal) for GAM and TAM and also there was some deal where NER paid us some GAM or TAM to move up in the allocation order, whatever that means.
Yeah, he's disposed of a few MLS domestic players, but to my knowledge hasn't acquired any except for HG's and USL promotions. Those promotions from within are good, but I think at some point he's going to need to make some trades for veteran domestic players. That may be the best way to get some more (needed) depth at CB or outside back for example.
Kaval told me that Chris Leitch knows all of those arcane rules and knows how to use them to best advantage, and that Chris is super smart, and easy to work with, and everyone like him. It was a real glowing "Chris is the best" sort of description. So I'm sure that CL is the one keeping on top of all of this. Go Quakes!! - Mark
Re: Jesse and European players. I think part of that is his familiarity with those players. He's been scouting talent in Europe for years and in US for about 1 year now. So of course he knows which European players represent good value. Identifying talent is the same process here or there. I think the best talent evaluators looks at the performance of a player over a length of time. The big guys like Chelsea, Bayern, etc.. track young prospects on other teams sometimes for years before buying them. After a year of watching MLS talent I assume Jesse is starting to get a good idea of who has value and how doesn't. I'll be surprised if he doesn't start acting on the domestic talent available pretty soon. Only a fool hires a player from his youtube highlight videos (looking at you JD)!
I’m sure Fioranelli isn’t used to any of these crazy mixed up MLS rules. At Roma the coaches Rudi Garcia and Luciano Spalletti would go to the Vice Presidents /directors (or whatever they called them) Franco Baldini and Walter Sabatini who inturn would ask the president/owner James Pallotta to ask for players. Pallotta would then write the checks and spend millions upon millions for a defender , forward or midfielder. All they have to work with here is a few hundred thousand dollars so I’m sure Chris Leitch would be useful in this respect. Jesse may have been scouting for years while he was in Europe but that doesn’t mean he can easily sign who he wants. With a salary cap of $3 or $4 million to work with, you can’t just buy anyone you want.
We will see if Jesse starts making intra-league signing to complement the Euro signings. And if he starts signing some "Americas" players to complement the Euro players, not that it has to be "even" or anything, but you need to cast your net as wide as possible to give you the best chance to get the best players for the best value. At this point, he's on the clock. We are waiting. Haven't seen it yet.
Welcome Yeferson Quintana! Love this signing, but just can't figure out how all of these international players are going to work. That's eleven if Ceren holds a green card. If Dawkins and Godoy both attain green cards as well we would still need to pick up an INT slot. Hopefully the FO knows things we don't. ________ Salary Budget Roster 1. He's not one of the signed seniors, right? He is for the rights list until he is signed I think...although I didn't check. But I fully expect him to be signed.
Cosmos listed him as a box to box #6 with the versatility to play outside. Looks like a direct replacement for Ceren. Younger, cheaper and American.
Ceren had a green card so for MLS purposes, that last one has no impact. May have PR impact in some peoples minds. All else equal I'd rather see an American get the job.
