Beyond the talent evaluation issues, it seems Jesse Fioranelli has little concept of what MLS players should be making...
One game remaining for every team but RSL, but still this is interesting... Dollars spent per point 5 highest: Toronto: $804,824.45 Chicago: $501,016.87 San Jose: $395,635.38 LAG: $364,729.33 Colorado: $347,913.25 5 lowest: Atlanta: $168,207.68 Real Salt Lake: $165,967.67 Dallas: $163,764.16 Columbus: $160,749.04 NYRB: $118,602.82
Obviously doesn't include other $ items such as transfer fees, but pretty surprising that Atlanta isn't even in the top 5.
It helps to score a lot of points to get that number down i.e. what would the Quakes come in at if they had just double the amount of points they do have?
The Quakes really need to stop signing expensive foreign defenders, especially aging ones from Europe who are way overpriced, most of the best defenses in MLS are built around draft picks, homegrowns, and MLS vets, with maybe a few foreign signings sprinkled in. We're at the other end of the spectrum... and close to the MLS record for most goals allowed in a season. Jesse Fioranelli really needs to take a look at the New York Red Bulls defense, since it's the best in the league. How much do their defenders make? How old are they? Where did they come from and how were they acquired? It's not rocket science, see what's working and try to copy it. NYRB's defense is anchored by 26 year old Long (who came from USL after failing to stick at two MLS teams) making 73k and 25 year old Parker (draft pick who they traded for) making 115k. Their other main defenders are Lawrence 255k (26, Jamaican, signed after a trial), Murillo 89k (22, Panamanian, signed after a season-long loan), Escobar 145k (23, Panamanian, on loan), plus Lade 120k and Duncan 54k from their academy. At the other end of the spectrum 3/4 of the Revs starting defense (the fourth was draft pick Andrew Farrell making 267k) and another defender on their bench are making over $3.1 million combined (Mancienne 1.37M, Dielna 910k, Somi 425k, Delemea 400k)... Montreal's defenders are similarly overpriced (Camacho 700k, Diallo 343k, Fanni 1.22M, Sagna 525k)... Meanwhile defender of the year Opara makes 343k, runner up Morrow 300k, and two time winner Chad Marshall who is part of one of the other best defenses in the league makes 341k. We have tons of overpriced foreign defenders: Quintana 340k, Qwiberg 168k, Kashia 550k, Jungwirth 567k, Cummings 300k, Affolter 232k. Some of those guys are better than others, but as a group, it's a complete disaster for $2.1 million. The cheap defenders are homegrowns (Lima 100k), draft picks (Marie 54k), and from USL (Ockford 67k) and they're hardly much worse (and in Lima's case, better) than the overpaid foreign signings...
Our inability to evaluate talent and get guys to work together is just appalling. And we've been bad at this for years. Is Vako worth $1.5M? I don't think so. I like Hyka and I'd want to keep him, but he is a bit spendy. Still, if we jettison some of the other guys on your list, that should free up some cap space for us. And again, MLB players cost a lot more than our soccer players. We can do better. Go Quakes!! - Mark
81K in high school not bad for Gilbert. On the other hand, if I was below him at or near league minimum, I'd be pretty pissed.
Jesse is an idiot to have refused to resign Bernardez, who I think was only making in the mid $300k, and then sign Kashia at $200k more, when they are so similar in age and ability. To me, Bernardez was much better last year than Kashia was this year. It’s too bad there’s no soccer person telling Fisher what a dolt Jesse is.
How many of those guys are living around here? Akanyirige almost certainly lives with his parents, since he's freaking 16, so that's zero rent. Wehan probably shares with other Quakes players, same with Partida for the brief period when he was here. Whatever their situation I'm sure they were sharing a rental with others and not paying anywhere close to $3k per month. There rest have been in Reno all year, where rent is probably considerably cheaper...
I'm not in disagreement on the cost, but 31 years old versus 36 in not that similar in age in soccer years. That came of course after signing a much younger Quintana flopped. Quintana is over ten years younger than Bernardez, but cost the same, so this move was loved until he hit the field.
Oh My bad. I thought Bernardez was 34 and Kashia 32. So instead, they are 5 years apart. But still, Bernardez appeared to be faster or at least have much better defensive skills than Kashia. Muma seemed to be able to still get the better of faster attackers. He also always marked the best player himself, whereas Kashia prefers to hang back and be the 2nd defender. I just never understood Jesse’s thinking on Centerbacks. He seemed to get it all wrong.
We might be more like 14/23 when factoring in transfer fees paid... https://old.reddit.com/r/MLS/comments/9rg16z/mls_total_roster_spending/
