Gomez signs new deal to coach Ecuadoran national team QUITO, Ecuador -- Ecuador coach Hernan Dario Gomez, who made history by qualifying the small Andean nation for its first World Cup, will stay in charge of the team, the Ecuadoran Football Federation (FEF) said on Thursday. FEF president Luis Chiriboga said that Gomez had signed a new contract and would attempt to repeat his feat and qualify Ecuador for the 2006 World Cup in Germany. "Today (the federation) has decided, and hired, Hernan Dario Gomez to continue this process on the way to Germany 2006," Chiriboga told a media conference broadcast on radio from the port city of Guayaquil. "I'm very happy, I'm very thankful and pleased to be back with the Ecuadoran team," Gomez said. Gomez, a Colombian affectionately known as "Bolillo", has become a national hero in Ecuador, even staying on after he was shot in the leg during an attack two years ago in the lobby of a hotel in Guayaquil. Gomez threatened to resign after the incident but was persuaded to stay in the job after hundreds of people marched through the streets of Quito. Ecuador appeared overawed in losing its first two World Cup games in Japan to Italy and Mexico and was knocked out in the first round. But the team salvaged some pride by beating Croatia in its last game. FEF vice-president Carlos Villacis told Reuters Gomez would earn more than $21,000 a month starting in January and that his salary would be reviewed annually, but declined to provide further details. http://espn.go.com/soccer/news/1999/0907/43455.html

NACIONAL working his mod mojo. Anyway, I just get the feeling that 2006 will be a tough road. Ecuador has bigger expectations. Magic is hard to keep working when the players have already heard it before. It all depends on what kind of DT he really is. Maybe he got a special group of players who will not be around again. Maybe he is good at turning around a program, but not good at maintaining it. People will not be taking them for granted and it is harder when everyone goes after you for being on the top. Suerte Ecuatorianos.

Ecuador's Future Ok, I hope this link works but here's an article from El Telegrafo de Guayaquil which names some of the players to watch in Ecuador's future. http://www.telegrafo.com.ec/hojas/miercoles/depo-1.html
Venezuela v Ecuador (R) Venezuela, who are trying to cast off their image as the ugly ducklings of South American football, continued their improvement with another win on Sunday, beating Ecuador 2-0 in a friendly. http://www.fifa.com/reuters/02-10/2002-10-21_45133_E.html
Difficult to show though. Congratulations to Venezuela but Ecuador will probably be the dormat of CONMEBOL qualifying for 2006. They peaked during qualifying last time and held on by a thread to qualify. Meanwhile, Venezuela will not be the easy points they used to be.
Held on by a thread? Ecuador finished in second place last time, they were already qualified by the last match when Brazil and Uruguay were still fighting to make it. People were saying the same thing about Ecuador last time because they lost some friendly matches against Venezuela prior to beginning the qualifying round-robin. I think it's very difficult to apply any logic to the friendly matches at this point. Coaches are trying out young players, and those playing abroad are not being called yet. Ecuador is even playing 40-year old Luis Capurro (came on as substitute in the 2nd half) because they want him to get 100 caps before he retires. This is not the same Ecuador you will see in qualifying.
the problem for ecuador will be how to replace key players like aguinaga and tin delgado cause they aren't getting any younger... ecuador had a pretty old team in the wcq as i can remember but maybe they have the replacements to fill up the vacant slots...
This is Ecuador's World Cup squad by position and age: 1 José Francisco Cevallos G 31 2 Augusto Poroso D 28 3 Iván Hurtado D 28 4 Ulises De La Cruz D 28 6 Raul Guerron D 26 8 Luis Gomez D 30 15 Marlon Ayoví D 31 17 Geovanni Espinoza D 25 23 Walter Ayoví D 23 5 Alfonso Obregon M 30 7 Nicolás Asencio M 27 10 Alex Aguinaga M 34 16 Cléber Chalá M 31 19 Edmundo Mendez M 23 20 Edwin Tenorio M 26 21 Wellington Sánchez M 27 9 Iván Kaviedes F 25 11 Agustín Delgado F 28 18 Carlos Tenorio F 23 I don't think that this is an old team. Of the aging players, only Aguinaga is a key player, and Ecuador have done better without Aguinaga in the past 2 years. The young players to watch in Ecuador include: Carlos Tenorio, F, 23 - incredibly fast and powerful striker with World Cup experience playing off the bench. Edison Mendez, M, 23 - skillful and intelligent midfielder who has scored important goals including the winner against Croatia in the World Cup. Otilino Tenorio, F, 22 - leading scorer of Copa Merconorte last year, he is scoring lots of goals in the league this year. Jorge Guagua, D, 21 - Standout central defender during the U-20 World Cup. Carlos Quinonez, M, 18 - Very young player with experience in youth internationals and Copa Libertadores. Trained with Ajax Amsterdam at age 16. Future star. There are some additional players that I have not mentioned or don't even know. Basically, my point is, Ecuador may or may not qualify again, but they will be just as tough as always.
Manolo said: " There are some additional players that I have not mentioned or don't even know. Basically, my point is, Ecuador may or may not qualify again, but they will be just as tough as always." I agree. I started a thread based on an article in El Telegrafo which details some of the young players in Ecuador's future. Here is the link: https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=19563 The list includes some of the players Manolo mentioned and adds some additional names. The team which played for Ecuador last night won't be the same which takes the field in the eliminatorias.
welcome back manolo! obregon has all the attention from el bolillo.... he will replace alex! not for a while under bolivia or chile......venezuela and ecuador will decide the fates for uruguay aND COLOMBIA IN THE NEAR FUTURE!
