One thing always seemed certain to me: Liverpool supporters were knowledgeable and committed to the club through the wind and the rain. Now all over the Internet, from Scousers and out of town supporters seemingly around the world there is a shower of invective and hate because the club has lost a game 4-1. And had some other less than stellar performances. On the worst end internet death threats. Organized hatred of the owners. Everyone with a villain. Players from Lovren to Can to Henderson to Mignolet to Firmino to Moreno etc castigated not just as not having skill but as terrible people. Klopp has gone from hero to people wanting him sacked in two months. This is not the Liverpool I fell in love with. This sounds very much like the sounds that come from the other side of the park I remain convinced that Klopp is the leader we need. He will sort out the problems. And I am old enough to know that the shiny new thing everyone wants may turn into a Sinama Pongolle or Cisse. So I think it’s time for everyone to remind themselves that a lost game or a lost season is nothing compared to 96 lost supporters. Our club has been through a lot, great joy and great sorrow, but we need to remind ourselves that YNWA is not just a slogan, or a song we sing before and after games, it’s what being an LFC supporter stands for.
Amen!! Bob - great post. It's become depressing coming into threads lately because of the stupidity and hate. I've tried to mellow out over the years and am embarrassed that I was probably like those folks when younger. But as you point out - we love Liverpool Football Club (ok I like the city a lot as well) - used to be called the best supporters on earth. We need to get back to that.
Definitely stick with the team through the storms and the sunny days. Just frustrating and a good place to air grievances on here! Don't want Klopp out and don't want any harm to our players. Just want them to remove their heads from their asses sometimes.
If you think posters on here are bad- try reading FB or Instagram. The people on here look like Rhodes Scholars.
Walk on...walk on... Well said LB If you can't support them when they lose then don't support them when they win...
Good stuff. Part of what I call the Liverpool Disease is reacting to every hot streak or new signing with "we're going to win the League!" type expectations. Those of us older supporters can be prone to it because of decades of frustration. There's such a thing as passionate, loyal criticism. But constructive criticism only.
I've simply gotten into the habit of steering clear of the online world after losses and I've taken to audiobooks in lieu of podcasts. Currently knee deep into Crime and Punishment. I'm not sure it's benefiting my mental health as I feel myself becoming increasingly paranoid as he descends into madness, but at least its not people raging about a football game.
I haven't been back to the Spurs thread since the loss for the very same reason. The finger pointing, the hate. I was really excited when Klopp came aboard and I still am. I didn't have the unrealistic expectations even after some early wins. The idea was to try and get in the CL we did that earlier than we thought. Nobody promised that we'd win the league. Again our achievable goal this season would be to fight our way into the top 4 and get some good experience in the CL. To do better than that we need those quality players. I've been doing my pissing and sarcasm on the Politics threads. It helps.
I think it was the goal we gave up against Newcastle that solidified my resignation. Can't bring myself to rage, no use in it. Our heads have well and truly gone on defense. Not good enough individually or collectively. My hope is the blinders have finally come off for Klopp and he fixes it by buying new players. The season isn't gone by any means. Lallana and Mane to return in November. Clyne hopefully by December. VVD in January. The competitors for 4th are as flawed as we are. We can still play within anyone on our day, so a CL run is still on the cards.
I had a copy of Crime and Punishment on audio. Listened to it several times until one of the tapes broke. George Guidall was the reader if IIRC. Great stuff. I think one can support the club while also engaging in legitimate criticism. Lovren was awful and does have a penchant for bone headed mistakes as we all know. Saying he should harmed in someway or is a worthless human being is different. The line gets fuzzy at times.
I don't hate Klopp, the team or FSG. But that doesn't mean I don't have concerns and I think there are concerns that need to be discussed but with objectivity and not hysteria. At this moment my concerns are mostly with Klopp. I think he has been given the support from the club and he has had every opportunity to shape this team to his wishes or at least get it to around 80%. I have no problems giving him time but there are a growing list of issues with how he is managing the team which concerns me. Some issues include tactical naivety, lack of character and on field leadership in the team, lack of certain players like a specialist DM (and I don't count Naby as one), wants to be everyone's friend and not the father eg (rotating three goalkeepers and not making the hard decisions). That said, I desperately want to be proven wrong because I love Klopps personality and enthusiasm and I really want him to succeed.
I'm as pessimistic as they come but Klopp and LFC have my support. I'm positive they can dig us out of the hole.
So basically what you are saying is that as much as you like Klopp. If he doesn't fit with the criteria you've laid out. That Liverpool should sack him, them spend time looking for a replacement that would (or not) give us instant gratification Perhaps a 4th spot in the league in his first season with entry into the CL? Or perhaps he won't fit at all. So we sack him and move on. Who do you have on your short list to replace Klopp right now? It'd be interesting to see how they're doing with their current club and to see if they may be enticed to come over. Just curious.
ZiZu is actually following a line of successful managers. Something like Liverpool back in the Glory Days....Until along came Souness
This guy named Gerrard should be ready in a few years...give Klopp time - he will work things out...when he retires after winning a PL title and CL title - Gerrard will step in, and continue the Red's road to GLORY!
This talk of crisis and holes is so overblown it does my head in. We've lost 2 matches all year after the 7th toughest 10 game schedule to start a season any team in the PL has had since 1994. We are top of our CL group. The general consensus was if we added Keita and VVD we'd be serious title contenders and if we didn't we be battling for top 4. We didn't add them and so we are battling for top 4. Two bad losses on the road against 2 of the best teams in the league isn't a crisis or a hole.
