There were plenty of rumors about PSV being interested but never ever materialized.

Just because of the sheer size of the US population online, beware: rumor mills create all these fake possible transfers for the clicks.

Well, his former USYNT teammate did post a mysterious tweet that sure seemed to suggest he was excited that they'd be on the same team again.

That dude Guidetti sure gets around. I recall back when he was a City player who excelled in the Eredivisie.

If he stays for spring, and if he can snag some friendly goals and look good in practice, he will get some minutes.

Beyond all the blablabla Hannover need goals more than they need anything else (besides wins/points) at this juncture.

A loan to MLS wouldn't be the worst idea for him, but I'm not sure any MLS team would be keen on taking on someone who could/would leave on a free in the summer. And Soto would be dumb to tie himself down with an MLS contract. Maybe some MLS team planning on making a bigger splash at forward over the summer would welcome him as a stopgap for the first couple months of the season.

Which is ironic since he’d be entering the 3rd year of a 4 year six figure a year RSL contract if he signed a HG contract with them in 2018. A club that gives minutes to youth.

    Not playing today either.

People will probably shit on me for this but wouldn't it be better if these kids play in MLS first? If you excell in MLS at a young age you can also make the jump to Europe and already have serious minutes under your belt. Just look at Alphonso Davies and Tyler Adams. If you can't make the line up in an MLS team then Europe was never for you.

who in MLS is following Davies and adams (lots of MLs minutes as a teen and showing all-star abilities)?

Pomykal is closest and he didn’t transfer this year, possibly due to injury.

I've been saying this for years and people hate me here for it.

"Sending" our best prospects for a free to rot in European benches or academies or Uxx teams is stupid. Sadly many are interested only in saying "we have so-and-so in City! and so-and-so with Bayern!"

    Stupid people.

who are the success stories from MLS recently other than adams and Davies again?

    let’s compare that to:

    - Pulisic
    - Weston
    - Reyna
    - Ledesma
    - Uly
    - dest
    - Richards
    - sargent
    - floater
    - Weah

are you saying the USMNT would be better if they had gone to MLS?

It is a fine line... Of course it is better for a young player to play in the MLS rather than languish on a U23/19 team or the Senior Team bench... but if they can break through then it is worth it.

same time....some mls teams let good young players rot too....keaton parks was on the bench for half a season in mls last year, for example

plus the mls teams have all the leverage and are at times coercive with playing time once a player´s contract is winding down....look at aaron long...he had offers but likely will never play in epl cuz the whims of nyrb

it isnt as simple as play in mls then jump back to europe...and it isnt always about being good enough either...your mls team has to have your interests at heart...and few do, imo.

Mee want our players at the appropriate level. Hopefully our best belong at the truly elite programs and staying in MLS would be a mistake while overshooting one’s level also is a problem.

the evidence of false negatives and false positives are going to occur but the concept stated herein that we shouldn’t send our best players to elite academies is unbelievably stupid even if only a fraction of them are able to succeed.

the majority of UCL knock out round players received major leagues minutes as teenagers or very close to that - goin to elite academies is a far faster way of getting to the majors as a teen as opposed to going though MLS.

exactly....look at how many washouts in europe get a chance in MLS....and vice versa...

gedion zelalem/lee nguyen etc is in MLs now....but how many mls washouts are in europe? basically zero.

i do agree that it is a big problem when players like soto are on the bench for poltical reasons basically rotting away....but just going to mls isnt solving everything, either.

I’m not interested in debating the merit of MLS DAs as I want them to be successful, particularly for US players who don’t have euro passports. If you are born in the US, it’s likely you’ll spend time at an MLS academy and that’s fine.

the question specifically was playing in MLS vs going to elite programs.

cmon man, everyone knows that gloster’s nickname is floater, no?

Water falls down not up. MLS washout would go to a UCL team or somewhere in a remote country.

Weah and Dest were raised in Europe and came through European youth systems. They're not very relevant to a discussion of the pros and cons of youth prospects rejecting MLS to chase the dream in Europe. Apples and oranges, essentially.

Lanez, Ledesma (Richard)*, Gloster/Floater are only 18-19 and/or have been in Europe for less than two seasons. Let's check back in a year or so before concluding anyone either made a mistake or hit a home run.

Chris Richards is only 19 and parlayed a loan to Bayern into a +$1 million transfer, since when he has started and gone 90' in 18 out of 23 games in 3 Liga this season, a level that's not a whole lot below MLS. If he hasn't succeeded (yet) he's definitely on the right track but, again, let's give it a season or two before drawing conclusions.

You'd need a much bigger sample of players old enough to have had time to achieve something in the game (or not) before saying anything about whether "the USMNT would be better if they had gone to MLS".

    * maybe you're talking about Nick Ledesma, who washed out at Aachen and dropped into the Oberliga before drifting out of the (semi-) pro game, but I doubt it.

Weah didn't move to Europe until he was 14 - he was with a youth club in Florida until he was 10, one in Brooklyn until he was 13, and then with the Red Bulls until he went to PSG.
