I train defense and thus play 5:3:2 and counter attack. This leads to my defenders often getting shots on goal. My question is this: Does my player's scoring skill decide if that shot goes in or not? Should I look buy defending trainees that have some scoring ability? Or does it not matter?

The scoring ability matters, although it is still random, if a player has more scoring they have a better chance of scoring on the chances they get.

Shawnee, KS? Is that where you'e from? If so and you have supporter you should join the KC Metro Fed.

that is incorrect. for normal chances the engine decides if a chance is scored based on the sector ratings (e.g. left attack vs. right defense). then, a scorer is chosen randomly - with a bias towards players with greater scoring ability.

    Yes, that's shawnee Kansas.

So scoring skill makes no difference and thus I shouldn't be looking for defenders who can score?

    Not really, but see below.

    No.

It does not matter in the sense that scoring skill on your defenders has zero impact on whether your team scores or not.

It does matter in the sense that once it's determined whether your team scores or not, the goal is then assigned, and players with scoring skill (including defenders) are more likely to be the scorer.

i think if you have high scoring, any player on the pitch has a chance for long-shot event. Set-pieces are more important than scoring, but i believe both are taken into account.

So there would be an advantage to having scoring ability for your defenders because they would have the possibility of a "long shot event" but it wouldn't be signficantly better because the majority of your scoring opportunities come from direct comparisons between your offense and their defense? Forgive me for asking the same question, but now I've received 3 answers and I don't understand.

long shots are rare events. i wouldn't pay extra for scoring on a defender. IF you are buying a defender with high set piece ability to be your set piece specialist, than some scoring ability is helpful as it raises the (slim) chance of a long shot but more importantly it is a factor that will help the player to score on penalties [ONLY IN A PENALTY SHOOT OUT - NOT IN REGULAR TIME]. bottom line, your defenders don't need scoring ability. only your strikers, and perhaps your set piece taker will benefit from scoring ability.

Unless that defender is the designated SP taker for matches.

I have 3 defenders with high SP skill. One with Divine, who is my designated SP taker for league and Cup matches. A WB who is ET SP taker and I set as my 2nd taker even in league matches in case my Divine is injured during the match, so he takes over SP duties. Then a B team CD who is ET in SP and is my SP taker for friendlies. I picked him up over 18 months ago and have kept him around even though he doesn't play A league matches team anymore, unless I have injury or card issues.

I think I am well covered for SP situations. :D

    That's not nitpicking, it's a crucial difference. :)
