Um, thought that Scranton was the Yankees' farm team.... But I'd like to get out to their stadium. Perhaps when my niece graduates from RIT this coming spring...

But that's one of the nice things about minor league baseball--the city, county, or community can own the team.... Makes it much harder to move.....

It's Louisville City and purple because they were affiliated as the B team of Orlando City when they formed.

Slugger Field is a very nice but not a nice place for soccer viewing.

They are now an independent team though....

Edit: And even when they were affiliated, it was nowhere close to what a minor league baseball team's affiliation to a major league team is.

Hot damn! I love it. No need for a 'who to protect' discussion on the roster thread.

Plus, thus time we won't lose a key player from a title team (Brad Evans). ;)

Yeah, I get it. It's just that not all cities are all that into traditional pro team sports. Evidently, Austin, for example. Wake me when that city shows any real evidence of being excited about MLS. And I'm not saying they necessarily should be; Austin has other stuff they're known for and get all wound up about. Same could be true of Louisville, for all I know. Except in place of music and BBQ it might be bourbon and horse racing. Or maybe Louisville will catch the pro sports bug, once that new stadium comes online. We'll see.

Regardless, I wish LouCity well. I enjoy my visits there (good Lord, the liquor store inventory - as opposed to what we have in Ohio - alone is worth the trip).

Not exactly. The current draft is considered a continuation of last year's since both LAFC and FC Cincinnati came in as single teams. In this expansion draft, the Crew lost Raitala.

The odd thing is that FC Cincinnati can draft a player from LAFC, so an expansion team can take a player from an expansion team.

Thank you for this and for thinking of others during your time of loss. The 2018 Crew family always has an extra seat available if you want to jump on.

But can we pick players from other teams? Once again, MLS gonna MLS.

But...since we're an expansion team next year and if PSV never fully gives notice of moving the team, then could the lawsuit still continue, even though we have a team? (As I saw suggested on FB.)

The way I assumed this was going happen was that Haslam was going to trade his expansion draft rights to Precourt for the Crew roster/brand/history and all that.

I finally found (and have updated) the spreadsheet I once created that tracks how many players each team has lost in expansion drafts over the years. The Crew, of course, are in first place by some margin; we've lost 16 players over the years, and the next closest team (DC) has lost 12. Next up are a handful of teams who've lost 10. It'll shock you to know the Galaxy have lost a whopping 8 players in 11 expansion drafts; none since 2009.

And in that expansion draft, the Crew will lose a player. That will be the first... The expansion team losing a player!

Settling the lawsuit is part of closing the deal for Haslam to buy the team. They are working with the city on it. Once Haslam officially purchases the team they will drop the suit. This is the best case scenario for both Ohio and MLS as Modell's law remains untested. MLS can still suggest the law is invalid and doesn't impact anything (after all their parallel path led them to a billionaire and new stadium). Meanwhile, Ohio can contend it is valid, that it influenced things by applying pressure (which it absolutely did) and keep it in its back pocket in the event anyone ever tries to pull this crap again with another team.

Once Haslam buys the team, the suit is done. As it should be, the law served its purpose and all is right with the world.

That is what is essentially happening. The reality is far dumber from what I can tell.

Essentially Haslam is buying the Columbus Crew rights and that purchase comes with the rights to operate the existing Columbus Crew with all history, players, etc. While Precourt who is selling his rights to operate the Crew and transferring those rights to a new team in Austin getting an expansion draft in the process. So the way its being reported is that the actual deal is structured as such that Haslam is buying the Crew and Precourt is taking an expansion slot in Austin...except on the forms they crossed out "existing rights for Columbus" and wrote "expansion rights for Columbus" for Haslam and for Precourt the crossed out "expansion rights for Austin" and wrote "existing rights for Austin"....because MLS.

I recalled the 2007-2010 ones being particularly damaging, and it seems to hold up in my cursory Wikipedia investigation. Did I get them all?

2017 #4 Jukka Raitala Los Angeles FC

Raitala was immediately traded to Montreal, where he played 28 times in 2018.

2016 #6 Mohammed Saeid Minnesota United FC

Saeid played three times for the loons before being traded to the Colorado Rapids. After one season and 29 appearances for Colorado, he returned to Europe, playing first in Denmark before joining a Swedish team in 2018.

2014 #19 Eric Gehrig Orlando City SC

Gehrig never played for Orlando before being traded to Chicago. He made 30 appearances with the fire over two seasons before retiring ahead of the 2017 season and becoming an assistant coach for the Fire.

2014 #11 Jairo Arrieta Orlando City FC

Arrieta was traded to D.C. without ever playing a game for Orlando City. He made 25 appearances over two seasons before signing with the Cosmos in 2016. Since then he's been playing on teams in his native Costa Rica.

2011 #7 Josh Gardner Montreal Impact

Gardner managed only 13 appearances across three seasons with the Impact and SKC before retiring after the 2014 season.

2010 #5 Adam Moffat Portland Timbers

Moffat only played 4 times for Portland before being traded to Houston, where he made 62 appearances and scored 7 goals, all likely from more than 40 yards out. In his third season in Houston, he was traded to Seattle, before signing with Dallas for one season. He played two years for the Cosmos before signing with USL Sacramento in 2017. He's married to the sister of former Crew teammate Steven Lenhart.

2010 #3 Eric Brunner Portland Timbers

Brunner appeared for Portland 45 times across two seasons before being traded to Houston where he made another 19 appearances before retiring after the 2014 season.

2009 #6 Alejandro Moreno Philadelphia Union

Moreno played 26 games for Philadelphia in their inaugural season before signing with Chivas USA, where he made an additional 46 appearances over two seasons before retirement.

2008 #10 Brad Evans Seattle Sounders

Drafted the day after winning the 2008 MLS Cup, Evans played 200 times for Seattle through the 2017 season, where he came on as a substitute in his second MLS Cup Final, after the season he signed with SKC as a free agent.

2007 #3 Ned Grabovoy San Jose Earthquakes

Played 24 times but was waived; played another 208 games mostly with RSL; Scored the winning penalty kick for RSL in the 2009 Conference Championship, and went on to win MLS cup with them that year. Later was drafted by NYCFC in their expansion year, but his contract was not renewed. He signed as a free agent with Portland for one season before retiring after 2016.

2006 #9 Ritchie Kotschau Toronto FC

Traded to RSL without making an appearance, where made three appearances over two seasons before retiring.

2004 #20 Erick Scott Real Salt Lake

Never played for RSL, but had a long career in Costa Rica, where he is still listed on a roster, but has made no appearances since 2013.

2004 #10 Nelson Akwari Real Salt Lake

41 appearances with RSL before moving on to USL.

    1997 #21 A.J. Wood Chicago Fire

Traded to D.C. United, played through 2001 and retired.

1997 #9 Jorge Salcedo Chicago Fire

11 appearances for Fire, then traded to Tampa (38 App in 2 seasons), then to Galaxy (8 App).

1997 #7 Jason Farrell Chicago Fire

Traded back to the Crew and made 98 appearances and scored 11 goals.

    So, this is a thing:

$40/year to be a member of a supporter's group for a non-existent team. Also, their colors are purple and black for some reason.

You guys are getting hung up by the terminology on the expansion thing.

Step back. See the whole picture. Forget what words they're using and forget the understandable cynicism over everything the league does.

Focus on what it is, not what they're calling it. Then try again.

It's right in front of you.

They also are selling merch now too and asking for donations to "support their efforts". I really have to wonder about the logic here. I mean its pretty apparent here that there is no way they are playing in Austin in 2019. So the soonest they could play is 2020, however, 2021 or whenever the stadium is done is more likely. So what are they going to push/support before then? Just go watch MLS games without a team? Watch the Bold? Their own website says they will begin playing "by 2021", see below.

I have to imagine that if someone told you they would be playing next year so you forked over money for membership or merchandise only to discover that was never going to happen you would be upset. If I were them I would seriously consider pulling those things down or giving them away for free in order to not tick people off. The only way it even makes sense to me is if they had already ordered it and are now just trying to cover their losses knowing that they won't have the support in 2021.
