It's a shame that his brother didn't bump into Precourt at some point. We don't need winners here. Presentations are the thing.
One would think that calling him a winner would be an implied congratulation. However - (and this might be the wrong thread but sod it) nothing that Berhalter has done fills me with confidence at all. His comments are full of babble speak and "I think". Just not very impressive.
Howabout we let him actually *coach* a game here first? But you are correct--wrong thread (until he gets fired, anyway, which will happen--someday).
unless his contract is not renewed, or he does so well another team comes in and buys out his contract, or his contract is terminated with mutual consent, or he resigns...etc.
No he should be coaching youth teams first. I glad he won that way he stays, it's just so infuriating to see such an opportunity slip right past.
That was not the tone of your post. The tone was to bash the guy currently at the helm before he's had a real chance to do a damn thing.
All GBS does is win trophies everywhere. So impressive. Truly an honor that he wore our shirt for 4 years. Makes me wonder who has won the most "major" trophies in World Soccer
This "hindsight" stuff is getting old, frankly. Let's keep it in the proper thread. The fact is that picking a player to coach right at the end of their playing careers is a cr*pshoot. It's easy to remember the ones that worked out. But many others did not. Or did you *really* think Jason Kreis would be good and Ben Olson would s*ck? I'm glad GBS is doing well at Lanus. I wish he'd taken the youth job here. Had he done so, he'd be the coach now, I think. But he also likes the big bucks. I'm not sure that MLS can pay him what Lanus will. Heck, I thought Berti Vogts would be a better coach than Jupp Heynckes when they hung them up. He wasn't (though even "Der Jupp" had some failures). Or for you Brits--there's Billy Wright who comes to mind.
maybe you mean leaving a job happens to everyone at some point. Being fired is a very specific term. When was the last time you got fired from your job? When was the last time you moved jobs?
Maybe 1974--summer job I was "laid off" from. I've been at my current company since 1983 (the actual job has changed many times, due to technolgical advances--but, if you include promotions, it's essentially the same position in essentially the same department). And it doesn't mean I'll get to the end of my career here without getting fired. However, my point was more to the the way HR handles things these days--they just call it something else, by and large. But here, we were speaking about coaching. That's rarely a lifetime job. Sir Alex was a notable exception--and even he got fired once. All coaches get canned. Eventually. With very rare exceptions. But even there my point was that Berhalter'll fit into this thread--someday. No matter what you call it. Feel free to dispute my terms if you want an argument for the sake of argument--or just want to be contrary. But Berhalter doesn't belong in this thread now. Let's keep the coaching discussion in the right thread. Please.
I'd bet on some of the guys from the Madrid teams of the 60s. Beckenbauer has to be up there too. Ed. Looked it up. Giggs may be correct--but that's partly because the English league has so many competitions to win that other leagues do not have. And do you count individual trophies like a scoring title or player of the year?
From what I understand, he was a head coach at Hammarby, which has quite a few resources, and he failed miserably. Is that the kind of "real chance to do a damn thing" you are talking about?
Then 13 League titles, 4 Fa Cups (each league has a cup right?) 2 Big Cups, 1 Super Cup, 1 Intercontinental Cup and 1 Club world Cup. So 22? Puskas had 15. Maybe a Bayern Munich player in the 70's as well. I got to 15 with Beckenbauer. 17 with Puyol. I was just counting team trophies won such as league, Main Cup, European titles, world titles and national team titles.
I'm talking about here, obviously. This is a different job that he was just hired for. This is the last thing I'll say about this on this thread. My comments were directed in a manner to say that you guys should offer congratulations to GBS for his achievement rather than bash G's, because 1) GBS deserves the congratulations and 2) G's has nothing to do with GBS's achievement.
Seems there is actually an exciting end to the Torneo Inicial in Argentina as well: This sums it up neatly. Though Guillermo is going to have to beat the Pope's team. http://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2013/dec/12/velez-sarsfield-newells-old-boys-argentina
