update on pretty much all things USL San Diego. https://www.soccernation.com/the-latest-on-usl-san-diego/
I don't think they play next year to be honest but thats cool with me Also, the amount of players who either grew up here or went to college here is HUGE. I used to keep a list and it was over 100 the last time I looked at it ( a few years ago), can only imagine what that looks like now with all the players Xolos and others put into their academy.
I hope you’re wrong, but I suspect you’re not. I guess we can distract ourselves in the meantime with the 1904FC/NISA sideshow at Qualcomm for as long as it lasts. Which won’t be long.
Honestly now that we’ve seen what the NISA side has been up to, or not, in their mad dash to be first out the gate I’m kinda glad Landy and the USL side are likely waiting til 2021. Build some excitement, build a front office, etc... 1904’s mad dash has been a master class in what not to do.
To be honest 1904 going first makes sense from a business view but not from a soccer view. First to market wins in most cases but here I think they are wrong as they are div3 and will eventually lose fans to USLSD
Well first to market with a superior product wins. 1904 are automatically a lesser product being D3. And playing in a massive mausoleum of a stadium rather than the smaller right sized Torero (which they inexplicably let the lease lapse on opening the door for USLSD to take it) undermines any advantage of being first. Add to that coming to market with the stupid 1904 moniker, no front office, and no marketing staff to speak of... they’ve fully negates what little advantage being first may have garnered them.
I'm not locally based and only have USL San Diego's social media and the unnamed soccer podcast as sources, but it seems they USL SD group is still trying for a 2020 launch or at least hasn't publicly ruled it out yet. Landon Donovan teased a couple of big announcements in the coming weeks a few days ago. My guess: team name, maybe colors (but no logo yet) as well as the launch date and head coach news (probably Landon himself if he has all required coaching badges until then)
Where has it taken off? I’ve not seen anything other than explanations of it since it’s completely out of the blue and the resulting derisive comments about it.
Jersey reveal was last night apparently. First I’ve heard they were even having an event to unveil it :/
In the southbay. I've seen stickers on cars since they announced 1904. Maybe its the demographic but plenty of folks know what 1904 is (even before the announcement)
Looks like the USL San Diego guys are looking for community input on the team colors https://www.soccernation.com/usl-san-diego-needs-your-colorful-input/
They are also hiring https://www.google.com/search?q=usl...htidocid=8inr9nzH2OIToLxgAAAAAA==&htivrt=jobs
Nice! I’d read they were looking to hire more than 20 FO positions in addition to what they already had.
USL San Diego is making some big club announcements Tuesday, September 17th my guess: 2020 starting date LD as headcoach maybe and update on club colors/names
Interesting. This kind of slipped through a few weeks ago when SDSU unveiled their stadium design for Mission Valley. Apparently the university has been having discussions with the USL team about a possible residency in the future. https://thedailyaztec.com/95018/news/sdsu-reveals-new-stadium-renderings-student-specific-amenities/ And of note for soccer the stadium will feature a safe standing terrace area in one end zone for both soccer supporters groups and SDSU student sections.
Big news out San Diego. Tonight the USL San Diego team will be revealing their GM (Donovan) as well as that they’re beginning play in March 2020. They’re playing at a planned expanded Torero Stadium (Stadium was known, that they wanted to expand was not). Possible the name is being revealed at the event tonight as well. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/soccer/story/2019-09-16/soccer-usl-san-diego-landon-donovan-warren-smith-usd-torero-stadium-2020?_amp=true Head coach and colors are being announced next month (also may be Donovan) along with a likely new majority investor to give the team even deeper pockets. They expect to take the field for exhibitions in Feb 2020 in advance of next season.
Found this image of Torero in an expanded configuration which may be a guide to how the USL side plans to expand it with additional seating on the west end line and low on the east end line.
Speaking of Torero, any ideas on pre/post game watering holes? I know Ballast Point is just down the bottom of the hill on Morena. Is there anything else nearby (ie somewhat walkable)?
Bunch of stuff at the bottom of the hill, a little further there is sidecar bar and Coronado Brewing Company. No place walk able but really short ubers. Even from the Trolley station.
