MLS Cup is still a couple of days off, but the offseason is already in full swing for most clubs. There's a lot of roster maneuvering happening all over MLS. Notebook on what I'm hearing, with notes on Reggie Cannon, Darwin Quintero and much, much more. https://t.co/HiPRdvCaSE— Sam Stejskal (@samstejskal) November 8, 2019 *snip Minnesota trying to move Darwin Quintero No surprise here: Minnesota United are attempting to offload Darwin Quintero. The DP was productive for much of his two-season spell with the Loons, but he fell out of favor with head coach Adrian Heath down the stretch in 2019, with the Minnesota United head coach leaving him out of the starting lineup in the club’s two biggest games of the season: their U.S. Open Cup final defeat at Atlanta and their first-round playoff loss to the LA Galaxy. With Heath now assuming a more powerful role in the Minnesota front office, it squares that the club would try to deal Quintero if the two do not see eye-to-eye. According to sources, both Houston and Orlando are interested in trading for the 32-year-old Colombian. The designated player has an option on his contract for 2020 that, according to one source, would pay him around $2 million. That same source added that Quintero would look for a new, multi-year deal if he lands with a new MLS team. One intriguing name that could possibly come up in trade talks for Quintero? Orlando’s Dom Dwyer. The 29-year-old striker and the Lions were occasionally at odds during their difficult 2019 season, and, per sources, the club is looking at options to move him this winter. Dwyer and Heath share a positive history, as Dwyer scored 15 goals in 13 games to help Heath and Orlando to the 2013 USL title while on loan to the club from Sporting Kansas City.

Updated: Loons star @darwinJR3 says on social media he won’t return, @MNUFC spokesman said team HAS NOT declined his option for 2020: Darwin Quintero says he and Minnesota United have parted ways as MLS trade window opens https://t.co/L7spzTX8Lr— Jerry Zgoda (@JerryZgoda) November 11, 2019 Can confirm: #MNUFC has not declined the option on Darwin Quintero's contract yet. The Loons have until November 21 to do so. I'd suspect the tweet was an attempt to speed up the timeline on sorting out the player's future. Still plenty to be resolved in this saga. https://t.co/0beGRyO87V— Jeff Rueter (@jeffrueter) November 11, 2019
So, if they decline the option, Quintero is a free agent and they get nothing, so they're not officially declining until they're sure they can't move him; but they fact that they haven't picked up the option tells the player (and every other team) he's not wanted and will be free to go. Seems they've backed themselves into a corner, like an NBA team fouling up a sign-and-trade.
I’m hearing the Houston Dynamo are now the frontrunners to land Darwin Quintero, no word on what Minnesota United would receive in a deal. #MLS #ForeverOrange #MNUFC— Ives Galarcep (@SoccerByIves) November 13, 2019

Last week, #MNUFC head coach Adrian Heath said the team was still hoping to bring back goalkeeper Vito Mannone. That prospect is now more difficult after he won MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. Good luck, Abu! .@NashvilleSC selects @abudanladi9 with their first pick of the @MLS Expansion Draft. pic.twitter.com/co8GHzdlhr— Minnesota United FC (@MNUFC) November 19, 2019
You can turn that into a positive when dealing with perspective GK's agents... "Look what we did for the last guy!"
And, not all that sad to see Abu go. He was fun to watch as a rookie, but at this point, looks like he's all speed, no touch. Maybe he'll develop more in Nashville, maybe he won't, but it's time for the Loons to move on.
