I still don't understand how it's not a red. The next defenders are a good 5 yards away. Sure his initial touch isn't towards goal, but that's because he's trying to get around the player. It was the right thing to do, and had he not been fouled, his next moves are going straight to goal. It's too far away for the keeper to get it.

his touch isn't toward goal? That's a bit disingenuous. It wasn't literally at the center of the goal, but it wasn't going towards the sideline. Baird easily gets to it with another step or two and is in on goal with defenders closing in behind him.

VAR was used on the Baird foul. VAR is used constantly. But the VAR referee only signals for an on-field review if s/he deems it a clear and obvious error. If the VAR agrees with the call on the field, then VAR was used but the next step where the official goes over and watches on the monitor doesn't happen.

Yes. That's one thing I can't stand about how the system works.

That’s a terrible policy. Next question: do we actually know that the VAR signaled the center on that call?
