There is always a populist colorful candidate that garners a lot of Dutch votes. I am sure it is the same in Belgium too . And did I miss it, or did Alabama not reject the "child molester"?

    By a very small margin.

My point was precisely that there is a difference between a "populist colorful candidate" and a "child molester". A distinction that was agreed upon across party lines, at one time.

Clarence Thomas got into the SC after sexual harassment but I bet he wouldn't have if the woman he harassed was white.

I see someone already beat me to this.

Yeah, but your system sends a populist to power, remind me again where Roy Moore will be for the next 6 years?

To be fair to Mr Moore the 10th Commandment states "You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor." It really doesn't distinguish between lawnmowers and daughters. :coffee:

Not my fault. Look to your American Democrat friends if you need to lay some blame.

More people voted for Hillary Clinton than voted for Donald Trump.

Dems need to stop buying into these narratives that pit groups of people against each other. One thing I respected about Obama is that he never pre judged the voters. He looked as comfortble talking to old white folks in Shitville Iowa as he did in his hometown Chicago. People respect that when you're genuine. Bill Clinton was similar.

They told Obama to not waste his time in Whitelandia Indiana. But he went there anyways and talked to everyone that was willing to listen. And he won. And even after 4 years of getting beat up by right wing media he went right back to Michigan and Ohio. He held campaign rallies at actual factories and talked to people face to face genuinely. And he swept the Midwest again in 2012.

Just saying ... when pol sci geeks write off large swathes of the electorate based on data, they're essentially self immolating the campaign. I had a particular job for 7 years that took me into peoples' homes on a regular basis ... all sorts of folks, all races, classes, ages, urban, rural and everything in between. I can't even count how many times I'd walk into Shitville Whitelandia house and see liberal Democrat paraphernalia everywhere. Or the opposite ... walking into an urban minority house and seeing Fox News on the TV. Eventually these surprises become so common that they're no longer surprises. It's just the complex social fabric that makes up this country.

ESPECIALLY at a time when the President acts as if he's a chief of a particular tribe, and not the President of the whole damn country and everybody in it.

This is a trap created by GOP strategists. By the Reagan era it was a refined and finely tuned strategy. A willingness to campaign on fear and paranoia instead of positive aspirations. Dems too often reinforce these identities and narratives by adopting the language of stereotypes.

Stereotypes are useful to study tendencies. But that's all they are. Tendencies not certainties. And this goes back to another period of my professional career when I learned how sales works. Never prequalify the customer. The amateur salesman sees a poor looking person and they won't even bother making the pitch. The salesman that gets stuck in this habit will never succeed. Another metaphor that I like is that you will never ever sleep with a hot woman if you never ask a hot woman to sleep with you. It's just human nature. People are a million times more willing to do something for you if you ask.

I have to confess that part of me regrets that the Dems won't be able to run "Senator So-And-So voted with child predator Roy Moore to do such-and-such" ads next year.

Oh, for f*ck's sake, you really went there?
You do realize, of course, that the person suspected in her accidental death is ALSO dead, right?

Were you trying to be funny?
    If so, you failed miserably.

They voted for Roy Moore overwhelmingly, as well.
