You must be dying for material if you go after my two week old, oddball post where my grammar wasn't up to your rigid reqs. Simply, he was a rookie with RSL out of college, was there for a few years and was a lackluster performer. I wish him well though, he is a good guy and he has passion.
Andrew Nestor just tweeted (about 20 min. ago) that there is some sort of announcement coming in the near future. "Great progress and momentum on & off the pitch." EDIT: NASL Facebook says 10am tomorrow.
I wonder if this is the competition format change that looks to be prematurely announce on the PR Islanders website...http://www.prislandersfc.com/index.php?id=153&newsid=3169.
Good find. Seems strange that the Islanders have let the cat out of the bag, but this has to be what is coming. It might not be the entire revelation, but this is an interesting development. It is almost if the NASL board of govenors attended a Big Soccer fan boy circle jerk and got caught up in the moment. All that is missing is promotion and relegation.
Nestor promised lots of big announcements in his tweet. Hopefully the others are a bit more impressive than a league format change. Color me not impressed.
Gotta admit, though, that WOULD be a pretty big change, even if it doesn't impress you. It's not been done here - by design, I don't believe - since the original ASL days (though the NASL had two distinct "seasons" once, one with international teams and once with actual teams, IIRC).
Correct, it would be a big change, just not one that most casual folks would care about. Just us hardcores will be interested in the details and debate them nine ways till Sunday. Guess my feeling is that it won't really help or hurt the league either way. An announcement to be excited about would be one that has a lasting or significant impact on the league.
I guess I don't like change... especially "sudden" change... what is there to get excited about here? call me old, but this is a little unnerving...
Don't let all the bluster in the main thread worry you, this change won't change things much at all. The changed format does bring some questions for Tampa Bay specifically. The season is starting a week or two earlier next year. Would be nice if the Rowdies could persuade the baseball commission to abandon those baseball games in March so they have more time to prepare the pitch conversion. This management needs to step up this offseason in order to sell this team. A longer season is a challenge that is going to take new ideas, better staff, and money.
Good Point I forgot about that, maybe they could get a deal so they can scrap that tournament it only drew sparse crowds and we know they have another complex they can use Walter Fuller complex.
At worst, they can play the first couple matches on the road. Or arrange for an opener at RayJay or the Trop. Opening at a big stadium helps at least gets a good opening pop for the Stars. (Who am I kidding? They won't want a soccer match at the Trop that close to Opening Day.) Are you sure you're not thinking of the 1967 United Soccer Association and National Professional Soccer League? They were the NASL's predecessors.
One that didn't hold. With this group, I would not want to have them trying to sell a game at RJS. Nor would, I think, the Trop be a great place to watch a game. I am aware of this. This is not what I'm referring to. The 1969 NASL season was not only split in two, each city basically had two different teams representing it. The "first half" was called the "International Cup," and had Kansas City, Baltimore, Dallas, Atlanta and St. Louis, but they were actually Wolverhampton Wanderers, West Ham, Dundee United, Aston Villa and Kilmarnock, respectively. They played an eight-game "season," which Kansas City won. Then the Spurs, Bays, Tornado, Chiefs and Stars played a 16-game "league" season after that, which the "new" Kansas City team also won (there were no playoffs).
