Real Salt Lake, Colorado Rapids Fans Announce Name of Yearly Competition Rocky Mountain Cup will award trophy to winner of 4-game series SPORTS: MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER For Immediate Release For More Information, contact: William Fisher - Committee of 10 (C10) email: press@realrapidscup.com www.realrapidscup.com —————————————————————————————————————————— For Immediate Release —————————————— Rocky Mountain Cup! Real Salt Lake, Colorado Rapids Fans Announce Name of Yearly Competition Salt Lake City, UT & Denver, CO March 4, 2005 — Over 500 soccer enthusiasts voted during the past 10 days to determine the name of the annual competition between Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids and Real Salt Lake. Voters going to RealRapidsCup.com were presented with competition name choices after the fan-based Committee of 10 (C10) sifted through dozens of supporter suggestions for the competition title. The overwhelming favorite and winner, tallying twice as many votes as the nearest rival, is Rocky Mountain Cup. First announced in January 2005, the supporters-driven C10 is already garnering great fan interest, as well as being endorsed by both MLS soccer clubs and local politicians as well. Fans of both teams turned out in almost equal numbers to vote on the competition name. “To have more than 500 votes cast in a one-week period is really amazing,” said Jason Maxwell, chairman of C10. “So many voters during the off-season shows that people are already excited about this competition. A good number of the voters were fans of other teams as well, which shows that this rivalry is generating interest all through Major League Soccer, not just in Denver or Salt Lake.” “This rivalry is very natural to the fans of Real Salt Lake,” said Juliana Montgomery, RSL supporter and member of C10. “It was discussed from day one and the fans have loved hating each other ever since. We are already very competitive about everything concerning Salt Lake and Denver, from the preseason draft to politics to snow totals.” “The Rocky Mountain Cup reflects everything we are forced to live with: each other,” said William Fisher, a Rapids supporter. “It doesn't just make sense regionally. As everyone worldwide knows, Colorado reigns supreme among the Rockies, and the Rapids will reign supreme over Real Salt Lake!" The Rocky Mountain Cup will be awarded to the winner of the teams’ four-game regular-season series. Other elements of the competition will include joint sponsorship and ticket initiatives coordinated by the Rapids and Real Salt Lake. Complete competition rules are available at RealRapidsCup.com C10 has also announced its intention to host a fundraising effort for the competition Trophy. The committee is working out details for an online auction of signed team gear and memorabilia for fans of the clubs. The Rocky Mountain Cup is an effort by fans to promote the already healthy, competitive spirit among supporters of the two top soccer teams in the region. As part of that effort, C10 will also work with supporters and both teams to coordinate road trips and other events surrounding the competition. RealRapidsCup.com is the organizing website run by C10 (the Committee of 10), is a fan-based supporters organization dedicated to the intra-league rivalry between Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids Major League Soccer clubs, in partnership with both teams. Rapids are going down. Should be good games between the two. RSL seems to be shaping out as an attacking minded team, and the Rapids are always one of those boring, no attack, stingy defense teams, so the matchup should be interesting. I'm gonna try to drive to the RSL games at Invesco Field.
You know why I'm going to like having RSL in the league? It gives the rest of us another reason to remember that Colorado actually has a team. No offense, Rapids fans, but seriously, outside of Cannon and Mastroeni, you kinda fly under the radar.
You have given out too much Reputation in the last 24 hours, try again later. Classic smack talk! I can't wait to use that one.
Yeah, sure, the Rapids have no offense LAST YEAR. We did have a great goalkeep and a solid defense last campaign. This year we got huge boost on our offensive roster along with an offense-minded coach. You all however have very little to boast about if anything. Your best players are a washed up Mathis, ancient Kries and a Goalie that couldnt even break the Fire's lineup. If anything, you should let your high school soccer champ challenge for the Rocky Mountain Cup for at least 2-3 years. Your coach hasn't been in the leage since it started and that was as a assistant. Last but not least you are in Utah. iLL BeAts FC Brown
So? So long as we keep making the playoffs and improve on our much deeper offense this year then that's all I care about. We're not here to win a popularity contest.
Nor the MLS Cup apparently. You just keep those expectations high... If you're content just making the playoffs, congrats. Apparently the cRapids have been successful in selling boring soccer and making you believe that a tie is in fact just as good as a win.
Are you dyslexic? I said to improve on our upgraded offense as well. Once we can improve our team and fix the mess that Hankinson left in his wake (which according to reports Claivjo has done a GREAT job of doing), then everything else will fall into place. Considering your teams apparent lack of depth, especially with GK, I'd make sure you guys worry about making the playoffs more than us making the playoffs. You guys were forecasted to finish 5th, afterall...
So apparently anything that Marc Connolly says is now gospel? Please. I'll buy the argument about lack of depth at GK. Most here are a little concerned about that. However, the lack of a solid keeper didn't seem to hold back DC much now did it? Aside from that, what apparent lack of depth are you talking about? And you don't have much to boast about with the Rapids "apparent lack of depth" at Forward. Peguero has serious potential but has injury problems. He makes Eddie Pope look durable. Cunningham can be a head case and only good when he wants to be. If he was SO good he wouldn't have lost his starting spot last year and been relegated to the bench.
Kreis and Mathis are washed up? And your hopes are placed on "newcomers" like Jeff Cunningham? Wake up Rapids fans, unless these mysterious foreign players become the next big thing, you'll be right where you are always. Playing boring/defensive minded soccer that gets the job "done" as far as playoffs but never making it any further.
A.) Defense wins championships anyways. And we have a great defense. B.) You obviously don't pay attention to the Rapids because the "score 1 goal and sit" tactic was Hanki's and, oh look, he is gone now. C.) Pedro is a proven MLS scorer even in a season when we had no offense and our best striker, John Spencer, missed almost the entire season. We had to rely on a rookie by the name of, gosh what was his name, he wasnt very good, oh I know, Jordan Cila. But wait, don't you all have him? Lots of goals to come from that young man (heheheh). D.) The young players we do have, indeed look like the next big thing. So I said it once and I will say it again, let your High school teams challenge for the Rocky Mountain Cup. You should concentrate on the PeeWee leagues for now. iLL BeAts FC brown #8
Happy Hour start early there on the other side of the hill? Yeah. The rapids have had a good defense for quite a while now. Remind me... How many championships have you won? How many supporter's shields has that defense won? Hanki leaving is the best thing you have going for you. You guys should be interesting to watch. However, no one except Marc Connolly and Rapids fans are predicting you to finish anywhere but the bottom of the conference next season. While I don't hold the same opinion, I doubt you will be much better than us and you won't be winning any hardware this season. Pedro is a talent, that's for sure. However, he's had a hard time staying healthy. If he can start more than 10 games this year, it will definitely help your offensive chances. It will be interesting to see how he plays with Cunningham who is a bit of a head case and can single-handedly grind an offense to a halt with his on-field pouting. Cila? Yeah, he plays for RSL. I'm not sure how much he will be relied on though sitting 4th or more likely 5th on the depth chart. Anything we get from him is just gravy. I don't know much about your young guys but we've got quite a few interesting prospects of our own in Luke K., Watson, and Flores. I will be a fun season and I look forward to winning the RMC. I don't think it will be easy but we definitely have the edge.
I realize your new here Hooligan, but lets be honest. Crapids have really sucked over the years. This isn't "RSL rocks, Crapids suck" bravado. Everyone knows this. Getting a losing coach to replace turtle coach doesn't mean anything. Win some matches, manage to not make everyone fall asleep when your team plays and then maybe you can talk some smack. Until that time, good luck.
OK...gotta call you on a couple things... At Mid? The current ready-for-MLS depth at this position is horrid right now. 2 words that are worse than Hanki: Greg Andrulis. Really? Who is "no one?" The consensus I've seen is that Colorado will be one of the better teams in the west. IMO, you're talking out of your backside here.
One of the better teams in the west? With no clear go to goal scorer, Chung and Henderson ready to collect their pensions, and Clavijo as coach? So that just means 5th place?
BTW, one of the better = top 3 out of 6. I'm tempted to go with 2nd or 3rd, behind LAG &/or FCD. Peguero and Cunningham can both serve as a go to scorer, and they have a couple decent backups in Harris & Gonzalez. As for their midfield, both Chung & Henderson may easily be backups or starters, in a midfield that contains Mastroeni, Beckerman, and Morales (new Uruguayan) among others (possibly Cullen, Cooke, Nkong, Denton, Noel, etc ??). They both still have some skill and would be some of the better backups in MLS, and both can be servicable starters, no worse than Kamler at a new position. (IMO Chung will start) Basically, their midfield isn't the best, but it isn't bad overall, and better than RSL's.
I fully agree with this statement... our high school teams would be a fair fight for the Crapids. It just isn't nice for a decent team like RSL to go picking on wanna be's like Colorado. Beside someone might injure themselves in that game... What do you say about sending Clearfield High to play the Crapids and bring the cup home to Utah?
