I'm obviously nervous about the match, but I think not letting up an away goal at home really completely put the tie in the hands of the away team in the second leg. We know that if they score it doesn't change anything: we only need to score and we go through. VAMOSSSSSSS
Man, that missed PK by Suarez in the first leg is really hurting now.. Not looking forward to this PK shootout... we don’t have any specialists on the field, Pratto is out, PKs are Armani’s weak point. Nothing to do but cross our fingers. No way Cruzeiro deserves to go through based on what was shown over 180 minutes
Justicia!!! Estamos en cuartos! Cruzeiro toma otra humillación en su cancha por parte del Mas Grande, cabrones!!!!!
I am not gonna celebrate that much because River was really poor over the two legs. Yes, we out played Cruzeiro, but this is a team that hasn't scored in over 500 minutes at this point. Some of the misses and miss hits by our team were pathetic. Again, I am happy and I am thankful for Armani who is an idol of the club, but damn, some of the shots from Carrascal (who was very good, other than his shooting boots), De La Cruz, and especially, and I mean especially Borre, looked like amateur shit. Borre is a player capable of some spectacular goals, but so much of what he does looks like a player who should be playing in the 4th division back in Colombia. Sometimes he can't control the simplest ball or make the easiest pass. His side footed shot when alone in the box was just pathetic. Luckily, he hit a great penalty. So I don't want to be a huge downer here, but River really should have beat this team over the two legs by a wide margin. So, as happy as I am to be going through, I want to see the team winning big and scoring goals, especially against ultra defensive teams who have such little quality going forward like cruzeiro But oh well, now onto the next round where we will face either San Lorenzo or Cerro, both of whom are IMO far inferior to even Cruzeiro. River, on paper, should be in the semis, where we will most likely face Boca...
Cerro Porteño defeated San Lorenzo in the return leg, so it looks like we have a rival for QF. First leg will be in Nuñez (3rd week of August), second leg in Asuncion (one week later). The Paraguayans finished 2nd in their league last season, but were one of their surprises in the Libertadores group stage, topping their group and beating Atletico Mineiro—twice— and Nacional (URU) in the process. Juan Pablo Carrizo is their starting GK, while other Argentines like Federico Carrizo (ex Boca) and Joaquin Larrivey form part of the team coached by Miguel Angel Russo (who was sacked from Alianza Lima shortly after we beat them 3-0 in the group stage). Historically, the two sides have faced each other 4 times (all in the Libertadores), with River having a slight advantage (2W, 1T, 1L). The most recent match-up finished 1-0 in our advantage for the Round of 16 of the 2000 Copa Libertadores, in a game in which River started their subs after having won the first leg 4-0 (Aimar, Angel, and Saviola scored the goals ) On paper River should proceed to QFs without problems, although Cerro demands respect after pulling off several surprises during this tournament. We have to do the job and seal the tie in the first leg so we don’t get any surprises in Asuncion
I guess it’s Cerro Porteño as the next rivals. Fvcking hate Paraguayan teams. Their teams always bunker heavily against River and have eliminated us in past copas with their weak ass tactics. I would’ve much rather faced Viggo Mortensen’s team.
A fun fact about Cerro Porteño that will make the tie even more interesting: Our old friend Juan Pablo Carrizo will be in goal for them. I honestly had no idea he was playing there until I saw the san lorenzo game last night (i missed the first leg) The last I'd heard of him was when he was at Inter as their back up keeper. Will be interesting to see the reception he gets in the home leg.I feel like it should be very much an indifferent reception. Neither here nor there. Its funny because Carrizo was very much idolized before it all went to shit for him, yet after having Barovero and now Armani, I think its kind of funny how much we idolized JP back in 07-08 and were so excited when he returned in 2010
Think Cerro is what you call a typical paraguayan team. 4-4-2 and very solid at the back but offensive wise very limited. I rather play them than San Lorenzo who had a strong window with the likes of Menossi (maybe the best Cinco in my opinion) and the Romero brothers. Think they should normally have a big impact even though I am not fully convinced of Pizzi.
Yeah, I even have a Carrizo GK kit from when he was at his peak lol You’re right — it’s crazy considering the legends that came after. However, many people still forget just how good JP was in 2008, when he (along with Ortega and Buonanotte) practically won us the title. He had many amazing games that tournament.
I still like Carrizo and hope he gets a welcome ovation. Unlike Barovero and Armani who both should be legends at River, Carrizo was a River youth player.
Scocco called up for Saturday’s game vs Racing If we can recover the pre-injury Nacho, we’ll be stacked up front this season between him, Pratto, Borre, and Suarez... and that’s without even counting Quintero
3 goals in 90 seconds to flip the score! Incredible! Good for Borre on the goals, but props to Palacios too for those fantastic assists
The difference between River and Racing historically is laughable. 50 games overall in professional football. The oldest clasico in argentine football is also the most lopsided. I honestly hope that this victory inspires Gallardo to go all out for the league title. I know its a mickey mouse tournament with 24 teams and only 23 games, but River has traditionally won the league in argentina, yet under Gallardo we haven't won it yet despite being the best team by a wide margin in many of the tournaments we played since taking over. Obviously the Libertadores should be the priority, but that doesn't mean you need to change the whole line up when you have a Libertadores clash. For example: Armani should never be on the bench. He is a goalkeeper for christ sake and the difference between him and Lux is massive. Again, I know the "Superliga" is a joke, but not winning the title when you have by far and away the best team is inexcusable and its about time River righted that situation under Gallardo
Wow. Stunning numbers here... The last 14 clasicos River has played. 2-0 vs Boca - (Superliga) 2-0 vs Racing - (Superliga) 2-0 vs San Lorenzo - (Superliga) 0-0 vs Racing - (Copa Libertadores)) 3-0 vs Racing - (Copa Libertadores) 1-1 vs San Lorenzo - (Superliga) 0-0 vs Independiente - (Copa Libertadores) 2-0 vs Boca - (Superliga) 3-1 vs Independiente - (Copa Libertadores) 2-2 vs Boca - (Copa Libertadores) 3-1 vs Boca - (Copa Libertadores) 2-0 vs Racing - (Superliga) 3-0 vs Independiente - (Superliga) 6-1 vs Racing - (Superliga) 10 Triunfos 4 Empates 31 Goles a favor 6 Goles en contra 9 partidos con valla invicta And obviously 3 of the 4 draws were in series in the Libertadores that we ended up winning, so they don't really count. Unbelievable run from Gallardo may it long last!
