I don't see why Klein and Vanegas aren't shown the door too. Why trust either of them to choose the next coach?
On "where the team is at right now": "We know that that responsibility extends beyond just Sigi... so, in saying that, [we] still have a fighters chance..." So, when we get knocked out of the playoffs, will they accept responsibility like Sigi and put in their resignations? I suspect that Anschutz really likes Klein and possibly more for his values than his acumen (they're both conservative evangelicals).
Do you really want to go there? There is such an easier explanation: Under Klein the team has made money for AEG. THAT is how his performance is measured, not a matter of his faith.
If I twist my brain into believing Klein is only about the business side then I’m a fan of his as things are good in most ways on that front. But he seems to be involved on player matters as well. See his quote from athletic article I posted earlier today.
Sigi's health was mentioned in that phone call. Perhaps his leaving came out of the blue to everyone if he quit for health concerns.
I think it's the right move. I want Sigi out but I think it's respectful to let him leave so we don't have to fire him. Kinnear is capable of finishing the season and hopefully can pump some energy in the team and finish strong. Klein out Vagenes out Kirsovski out
You're probably right, although I tend to think the days of the Galaxy making money are short-lived since they are being propped up by a local TV deal signed under a former regime.
I'll always have a soft spot for Sigi, but he certainly didn't do a good job this go around. I wish him luck in the future but I think his career, at least in MLS, is done. I hope he finds health and happiness in retirement.
I've been quietly concerned about this for a while. 2021 our TV deal ends and 2023 the StubHub sponsorship ends. Not that I specifically expect our sponsorship money to go down, just that we've slipped in stature relative to a lot of the rest of the league and I don't really have any trust in the current FO.
Well said. You captured my sentiment exactly. I had so hoped he could rekindle the old magic, but he couldn't do it saddled with this roster.
So wow, I'm gone from the internets for a couple days and this happened. Also, why are Klein and Vagenas still employed?
Since I posted about Klein being measured by Beckerman on his ability to make money many months ago, I have to agree that this is the primary measure he is evaluated on. However - the COG pod cast mentioned how unnamed FO personnel appeared to be untouchable (I don't remember the exact quote). So if you are asking me if its possible that there are other factors including personal affinity based on similar values contributing to his possible untouchability then my answer is yes. Besides its been my observation of the corporate world that executives are seldom held accountable for bad results that come as a direct product of their bad decisions. Like with Sigi, its the people who have deal with the aftermath of those crap decisions that get held accountable.
My vote is to hire Caleb Porter. The guy is a winner. Plus, I like his style. Unlike Sigi, I've never heard him say he "hopes to get a point on the road if everything goes OK." Looks like the only reason he left is some dispute with Merritt Paulson... something to do with how they were winning games. The Timbers finished first place last year under Porter when he left.
Porter has some good credentials as a coach. Questionable who's the bigger dick, Porter or Kreis. Tough call. Some Porter hightlights. https://www.oregonlive.com/timbers/index.ssf/2015/04/four_times_that_caleb_porters.html Well, he's passionate, anyway. One of my enduring memories of him is watching the Timbers celebration at their stadium after they won MLS Cup - he was very, very drunk.
Kreis and Porter are similar in that both are insanely driven and competitive. Many moons ago I watched Kreis play at Duke and he played as hard as anyone I've ever seen.
Porter‘s record FWIW: Western Conference Code: 2013: 1st | 3rd | Conf Finals 2014: 6th | 11th | DNQ 2015: 3rd | 5th | MLS Champions 2016: 7th | 12th | DNQ 2017: 1st | 6th | Conf Semi Finals He was all over the place with Portland, from dreadful to winning an MLS Cup. He has no record outside of MLS and the comparisons to Kreis are damning with faint praise; Kreis has been terrible in every post-RSL position he’s taken on.
Porter checks all the boxes our FO is likely to look for: MLS retread Available cheap No need to spend any time or money actually looking for a good coach Yup. he's got it all.
