Eusebio passed today at the age of 71. The greatest player to ever wear the Benfica crest. May he rest in peace.

condolences boys...he was one of the greats! Also a good family friend--in-laws, who grew up with him and kept a good relationship with him all these years, are a mess today.

I've only seen him play through old video footage, but the man was truly an astonishing footballer. I wish I was able to see him play during his prime in the 60's and 70's.

The first true superstar and the man who put Portugal on the map.

This is a sad day for world football...

He was an example for every aspiring footballer and professional player. His skills as a player were unmatched during his time, his presence on the pitch was immediately noticeable and the impact he had in the history of S.L.B football clup, and the sport in general, is undeniable. His stamina was through the roof, his positioning and free playing style was second to none and he had, quite possibly, the greatest shot power and accuracy this sport has ever seen.

I remember when I was a kid and loved playing football with my friends, my dad had a barely functional VCR and me and a couple of friends used to watch taped Eusébio games my dad had, to try and imitate his play to kick everyone's ass at school. I will never forget my first memories of watching and learning from Eusébio games at S.L.B and our national team. He was my biggest inspiration when I was a kid, and when I loved to play as a 9/9.5.

A true legend of world football, and a great person. It's tough to even say this, but rest in peace Eusébio da Silva Ferreira. The greatest portuguese player in history!

Even though I am not a Benfiquista and am a fan of the club he is open about his dislike for
, I have to express my condolences. RIP... this man was a legend.. represented an era (Estado Novo), a club (Benfica) , a country (Portugal), a people (African-descent footballers breaking barriers).

Watching his speed and shots (keeping in mind those old heavy footballs) is still impressive. he would definitely be able to succeed in the modern game with modern training methods - no doubts about that.

Descansa em paz! I'm lucky I got to realize a dream and meet him just once. He really was as everyone describes, friendly, inviting, cheerful. He was with the Champions League Trophy tour in New York and I was probably one of the few people there with a Portuguese shirt, nevermind a replica of the one he wore in the 70s. He was there again for another marking moment in my life when I finally got to see Portugal play for the first time live against Brazil in Boston. He was always there for that team even when his medical conditions probably would have dictated most to not even travel. You kind of had this feeling it was going to come once the heart problems came up in the most recent years. A true symbol of sportsmanship, integrity, work-ethic and the classic story of overcoming enormous struggles.

R.I.P. Eusebio, one of the best players of all time has passed away. He won numerous titles with SL Benfica and won Portugal's best performance in a World Cup in 1966, winning the golden boot. We lost a great man, I took a photo next to his Statue at the Estadio da Luz. He scored 733 goals in 745 games. Viva o Rei Eusebio, we will never forget you!

At least Portugal has a new King now to carry the torch, hope 2014 goes well for Ronaldo and Portugal.

TBH for a long time I never thought Portugal would get a player who can even come close to Eusebio...still watching Eusebio videos today is impressive. I expect CR7 to win the ballon dor next week and be the first Portuguese two win twice, bu

I really think Eusebio could play in any era, while I have doubts about some other past greats.

FIFA is going to Honour Eusebio at the Ballon Dor Gala, will only be fitting that CR7 Wins it for the second time the same day.

It was a long time, so you're right. 30ish years between all time greats. Impressive still. And neither from the mainland, fwiw
