This is encouraging, but begs the question: how can you sign a DP without signing a contract? Legally, I would think you'd have to do them both simultaneously.

Pre-contract almost makes me wonder if this would be a signing that can't join till summer window?

Another guess is maybe it's "pre-contract" because the MLS transfer window doesn't technically open until February (IIRC)?

And people laughed when I started the Optimism Thread.

And yes, if you "signed" the player, why can't you tell us who he is? I guess the "pre-contract" is like an agreement that is not official, but hasn't been completely signed off by the league yet.

I hope it isn't a summer transfer window signing. And people are bitching about Jones missing 6 games, plus a few for Nats appearances.

Do does this make us the first team this off-season to sign a DP?

    I am guessing summer transfer?

Hopefully this. I worry it'll be a mid-season loan from Sporting, though. Not exactly immediate help.

Perhaps the Revs are encountering the same thing? Best to get the signing done early, if possible, so a player can not string you along and then sign in Europe instead. I really hope that this does not happen to the Revs.

According to his wiki page, he is older than Jones.

This quote from his wiki page made me laugh:

In an interview to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, a few months after his transfer, he talked about his experience in Asia by stating: "It was a completely different reality, that I couldn't accept. Everything was so non professional"

I'd be happy if it was Ricardo Costa. He's already more than I was expecting, he might be a move the needle guy with the Portuguese population, and hopefully he's only a DP for this year, meaning his salary will be under 600K and the transfer is what makes him a DP.

    Now let's pick up another 2 DP's!!!

Then the DP in this situation must mean decrepit player. ;)

Just thinking out loud here -

If Revs will only sign a DP who is a needle mover both on- and off- the field...

and, at the same time, there currently seems to be no existing rumors linking Revs to a high profile player...

...how should Bilello's tweet be interpreted?

    i.e.,

Are the Revs now the best-ever at keeping a huge huge huge signing a secret and under wraps,

    OR

Have they re-revised their working definition of Designated Player (see: Caraglio, Bengston) to no longer require the same magnitude of "needle moving" used in most recent years to guide their (in)activity on the DP front?

    Maybe there are other interpretations.

Fun read below to revisit the Caraglio signing, including use of DVDs and the funny money games around Caraglio's $54K base salary while still heralding the "First Designated Player":
