I noticed that Austin Aviza started the opener for Syracuse. He was supposed to apprentice under Alex Bono for a year but since Bono went pro it looks like he got the job. Even good GKs often have to wait to start, so that'll be good experience for him.

Congrats Diego on being the youngest player in MLS history to score 25 goals. Kudos to the Rev Academy and our FO for signing him and to Heaps for playing him.

I've been hard on the kid but this honor is well deserved and over the past few years he's shown how much talent he's got. Diego's got a bright future ahead of him, wherever he ends up.

Recently, he's shown something new in addition to the raw talent. It seems like he's been more focused/coachable. I'm wondering if some of the credit for this should go to Jermaine as Diego's recent run of form coincides pretty well with his return.

    Don't get me started........haha ;)

I can remember watching Diego as U13 playing for Greater Boston in a State Cup game and totally dominating scoring a bicycle kick goal. The Revs DAP status and the Homegrown rule announcements/timing definitely helped secure him.

Agree. I think we fans (other than the teenage girls:eek:) tend to underestimate Diego because he's been with us so long.

I think he's realized that he has to make a difference when he's on the field. In '13, he did that (probably because it was all new and exciting and the league hadn't figured him out yet). In '14, there were too many games where he didn't - and, as a result, there were better options for Heaps.

He's never going to be an outstanding defender, so he has to be making an impact in the offense (and be a competent/reliable defender) to justify staying in the lineup.

Daily Orange article on Austin Aviza.

I think Syracuse intended Aviza to spend his freshman year as Alex Bono's understudy. But Bono went pro, so Aviza went straight into the starting lineup. It's a good experience for him. I'd guess he's one of the better bets to eventually sign a HGP contract among the contingent of Revs academy alumni currently in college.
