You can take USL out of the man, but you can't take the man out of USL... Kelly Arrives on Loan with Kickers

Not the best professional debut for JT Marcinkowski as Reno lose 4-3 at home to Swope Park Rangers in a blizzard... Highlights Full game
Definitely rough game. Reno looked good and in control in the first half but came out flat in the second. JT got nutmegged on the first two, caught out in no man's land on the winner and the third got lost in a pinball scrum. Defense did him no favors as they left him open 1v1 on 3 of the goals.
JT Marcinkowski Helps Reno Escape Las Vegas With a Point This derby is 🔥@lvlightsfc with their first goal at home but @Reno1868FC equalize on the very next play!#LVvRNO #USL pic.twitter.com/8AJL8N3eMD— USL Championship (@USLChampionship) March 25, 2018 The SAVE of the match that helped us escape with 1⃣ point! Have a match @JT_Marcinkowski!#AllForOurCity pic.twitter.com/Lel0wtEQMt— SK Holdings (@SKholdings_) March 25, 2018
JT is looking good in the air right now. The goal conceded JT had no chance on. Defense left him out to dry by being slow to the ball.
It's good to see JT and Musovski having good games. As I've said, I'm not confident in Tarbell, so I want to see JT develop rapidly, so he can take over, maybe even this season. Maybe soon? Go Quakes!! - Mark
Last year we started with Bersano in net, then went to Tarbell as Bersano looked slow and uncertain. Tarbell didn't do any better but was more decisive. After a couple of matches Bersano was back in net and looked much better than Tarbell. We stayed with Bersano the rest of the year. JT should be very good next year if he grows like Bersano did last year. Musovski needs to control his aggression and he will be a good addition. He shows great energy and heart.
Forgot to mention Musovski picked up two yellows against Vegas and is suspended this week. Thiaw came in in the 78th minute. He looked a little raw but showed good energy and was aggressive offensively.
Calvillo, Marie and Felipe starting (plus Mfeka), Thiaw on the bench... Here is who is starting for us on this BEAUTIFUL day at @greaternvfield!@KyleIhn making his debut today for Reno in goal. #AllForOurCity | #RNOvPHX pic.twitter.com/CofaLWrCm9— SK Holdings (@SKholdings_) March 31, 2018 Marcinkowski not in the 18... is he at some USYNT camp or will he be in the 18 for the Quakes this evening as a reward for his performance in Reno's last game?
https://www.uslsoccer.com/portlandtimbers2-reno1868fc-971312 Musovski, Luis Felipe, and JTM started. Thiaw, Mfeka, and Partida were subs. Musovski scored both goals in a win over PT2:
I saw the last 70 minutes of the game. For about the first 5 minutes I saw Portland was fully in control. Then the tide started turning and in about 10 minutes Reno was in control. A bad back pass at about 40 minutes gave Portland the lead, but Reno kept pushing the issue. Second half was all Reno. Partida came on at the half and Reno's defense improved and they were on the front foot practically the whole have. Each substitution made by Reno just increases the pressure. The only real problem was Reno was trying to walk the ball into goal instead of taking shots when they had them.
BBC article on the Las Vegas Lights USL team, (which is undefeated and averaging 8000+ per game). https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/43830678
It is Vegas, which has world wide cache for its entertainment thus making it newsworthy for anything it does. I think this is bs but it is the way the media works and humans work.
Cross-posted to the "a small team" thread, for obvious reasons... Yes the only professional soccer team in the entire SF Bay Area is small potatoes compared to a second division USL team that has existed for a few months and draws 8k to their baseball stadium... Also I was watching Men In Blazers earlier this week and Roger Bennett was wearing a Reno 1868 FC jersey... our USL affiliate! How can a team in Silicon Valley possibly compete with glamorous Reno though... Do the Quakes even employ any marketing people? If so maybe they should check out what Vegas are doing, or at least send out a few jerseys like Reno. ..
The San Jose Earthquakes are a pretty well-known brand in San Jose. Unfortunately, they're known for being bad. Just this morning, my dentist asked me how the Earthquakes were doing. I had to tell her, "lousy."
In part, our marketing guys aren't very good. (Or we'd see more and better stuff about us.) But also, they are fighting against a long history of lousy marketing dudes and historic arrogance from our team. Sure, much of that is ancient history, but the first impression we made was bad. And in part, we are in a crowded sports market. The other teams are more established, in more established sports. And of course, the local media folks are dinosaurs who don't give a fig about soccer. Notice that where MLS (and to some extent USL) clubs get good media coverage is in 2.0 and 3.0 cities. Once MLS established itself as a league that isn't going away, now cities and their media welcome MLS clubs. (And to some extent this works for USL teams also.) It's not just that these are new teams, it's the community and media embrace them from the get, because soccer is up and coming! However, back in MLS 1.0 land, the media still hates us my precious. Go Quakes!! Fire Stahre!! - Mark
There's like one soccer show on American television, Men in Blazers. If you send Roger Bennett pretty much any soccer jersey, he will wear it on air. Our freaking USL affiliate Reno sent him a jersey and he wore it. You think he has some bias against San Jose as "MLS 1.0" when he has no problem wearing a jersey for our lower division affiliate? They've had a life-size cardboard cutout of Kyle Beckerman in full RSL gear ("from glamorous Salt Lake City"!) on their tiny set since 2014. Has anyone at the Quakes marketing department thought to send them some swag? That's just one small simple thing. But in any case blaming the media is so defeatist. Okay Vegas is glamorous (some would say the SF Bay Area is too, it certainly has a much larger population, more wealth, etc) but it's not like the Quakes are TRYING crazy stuff and NOT getting coverage because the local media sees them as "boring MLS 1.0"... Look at that BBC article on the Las Vegas Lights... Do the Quakes ever take their team photo anyplace more interesting than on a soccer field? Do they have multiple llama mascots running around? Do they have a partnership with a local pot store (legal here before it was in Nevada)? Of course not.
