Yeah, he was still in pro shape... I felt a little sickly standing next to him, but hey, I'm a rec player and I can't blow my lanky Simononesque physique pumping up in the gym...strictly beer can curls for me. As a defender and bass player, it's our duty to poke fun at forwards and frontmen...it's in our DNA. Robert Conrad was an actor in the 60s-80s...not the tallest guy around with a healthy short guy-tough guy vibe. All kidding aside, Russell was a very solid mellow dude...and he turned out to be a darn good coach.
Robert Conrad was an actor known for playing tough guy roles when I was growing up in the 60's and 70's. Ian is still in good shape now. And yes he is a mellow guy most of the time. It serves him well. After our 5th game last year, he was quoted as saying, angrily, "When are we going to stop giving up late goals." The rest is one great season that followed his question.
In the '60s Conrad was in the TV series "Wild, Wild West", in the '70s "Baa Baa Black Sheep". 20 years ago there was a Wild Wild West movie starring Will Smith.
Yep, then he did those Duracell commercials..."Knock this battery off my shoulder"... and that forever sealed his fate as the short guy macho man...so over the top it makes me gut laugh..
First you make me feel old because you can play soccer without collapsing of a heart attack. Then you claim ignorance of Robert Conrad. Kids these days.
I’ve refereed several games coached by Ian and was always impressed by his demeanor with the kids, as well as his nonchalance with the referees. Same can be said for Dayak. The Beast is also a coach who acts like a professional.
Haha yes it's definitely a defender's duty to poke fun at those primmadonna forwards. Well now you know how I felt the other day going up against those Reno players. All of their legs were freakin ripped, and even their slow guys were fast. Oh ok now your joke makes sense bassplayer And I thought I was old at 27. Most of my teammates are in the 18-21 range. A couple others at 25-27. I would kill to be 18 again. So much endless energy and it was easy to get in shape from just playing. Now I have to try and do extra running.
Ha! It gets much worse when you add several decades... You can literally smell the embalming fluid on the sidelines...
What? I thought that was tiger balming fluid! And I know your're serious when you run, I've ridden by you a few times on the Guadalupe Creek trail and couldn't get your attention (granted I'm hard to recognize in sunglasses and a bike helmet... I'm riding a 2001 Look)
No, the definition of "playing shape" changes.... Mainly, can you still propel your body forward after the cigs and Patron at halftime...all capped off by indiscriminate lying about how well we played when were 27 years old.
Man, I must have a doppelgänger. I haven't run the Guad trail. I only run when I'm actually on the field. The only thing that saves me is I play back to back games Sat/Sun and midweek in the summer.
He's a thinker on the field, and has always had a great left footed shot. Glad I didn't try too hard to get your attention!
Back in the day not too bad, but it took a while to get there. My Sunday team was started in 1981 by a handful of diehard Quake fans with little to no experience playing soccer...just an enthusiasm to learn the sport...maybe 1-2 guys might have played a year in high school at most. Started out at the lowest division in rec. Over time we got pretty good. The team has not missed a season (three per year) for 37 years. No club affiliations or sponsors just a bunch a guys who enjoyed the learning experience...mostly students of the game. We moved to over 35 ball about 6 years ago. We have an original and several near originals still playing. The tough part is when you get to this advanced age you read the game at a ridiculous level but the speed limitations are frustrating. I used to go to a south county kick around where a lot of IBM guys played...Euros and South Americans. There was a French guy who was in his late 60s... in great shape. He told me something I've never forgotten. He said don't ever stop playing...the game will take care of you. That's how I intend to roll...
Wow that's awesome! I know a lot of Sunday teams that have been around for a while, but since 81!? That's impressive. A lot of teams just kinda fall apart after they all get close to 40. I bet having the over 35 league helps a lot though. Oh man I can imagine being able to see what's happening and then not being able to get there fast enough must be frustrating. Right on! I intend to do the same thing.
