Meyer is the composer in residence for the Alabama Symphony Orchestra this season. I look forward to his pieces this year.
Pittsburgh's Composer in Residence is Steven Stucky, whose work I don't know much about. I wouldn't mind if the ASO and the PSO worked out a trade, though: Guest Composer and a woodwind to be named later or something.
Nice. Last year we had Avner Dorman, whose work I wasn't familiar with before the season. I was way into it by the end of the year though. Was very happy that they chose someone with such bold, modern compositions. The year before that, we had Paul Lansky. Lansky's music was sampled in the Radiohead song "Idioteque." The ASO had a program of Lansky's music and of the orchestral works of Jonny Greenwood (of Radiohead.) First time in a long time I've seen a sold out 1,300 seat theater for some seriously modern music.
