I remember reading an article by Paul Gardner in Soccer America about Palomares back around 1996. The entire article was dedicated to Gardner's amazement with the skills of Palomares. He was raving about him in the same manner that we now rave about Freddy. Gardner was convinced he was the future of US Soccer; and that's coming from a pretty cynical guy.

I always remember that article and half-expect to see Palomares to reappear on the US national team scene. But then I remember that he's playing in the Croatian 3rd Div and find myself thinking about something else.

For what it's worth, Zepce appears to be in the Bosnian First Division, at the middle of the table.

I have to correct myself. Graficar were in the 2. division when he was there in the fall of 2002. I found a report on a round of 32 Croatian cup match. Graficar defeated a decent 1. division team. Raul started and was substituted 10 minutes before the end. He got a 6.5 rating(5 to 10 scale, ratings below 5 sometimes used for very bad performances). 6.5 means OK but not much more than that. Attendance: 600
Here’s some interesting stuff about him
    http://www.pacificcoastsoccer.org/rev/raul.html
Janica said on 1. July that her boyfriend currently doesn’t have a club but that he will come soon to Europe from LA to see if he can find anything,
Simply an incredible story. From captaining US youth NT to Kaiserslautern to Osijek to Graficar to Zepce to not having a club.

Gardner was probably gushing about him because he's latino. That's all the reason he needs.

Got some news if someone is still interested. Raul is back in Zepce. He’s been starting but hasn’t been outstanding so far. They are 5. in a 16 team league after 15 rounds.
    I’d say he’s having a decent pro career :)

Yeah, I would have to put this story right there with JCE, the Yanks in Kathmandu, and Dontavious Fleming as some of the best YA randomness I've seen since I started obsessively following this stuff about two or three years ago...

The reason I bumbed the thread is because I got an email out of nowhere from "The Biggest Janica Fan in the World". She wanted to see that picture of Raul and Janica, but I'm afraid it's gone forever.

I thought I read in a Spanish news source that Janica had thyroid problems and that her skiing career was on hold. This was several months ago, and it made no mention of Raul.

Well, Google still has the thumbnails cached:
    http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&q=raul+janica

Maybe she could email the people who run the site that hosted them...

In fact if you search on "Janica" and "Raul" several other stories come up. Maybe some would like to try to search for interesting bits of news here:

Quote from Raul in one of the articles:

“Janica asked me to shave my moustaches , but as a true Mexican I refused!”

He’s become a substitute at Zepce. The main reason for that are his constant injury trobles. Looks like his body can’t take it.

He was 1a to Landon's 1b in SoCal back in 98. I may have mentioned this before.

Oh, I mentioned that on this thread before, like last year.

    Never mind.

To answer the question asked a year ago why Karadzic and Mladic are still running around, well, it's because the assets haven't really been set loose to get them. Not to mention that the Karadzic has been tipped off before when the guys are closing in on him. But, I would also ask why it is that accused Croatian war criminals are hanging out in Croatia.................it has to go both ways.

BTW guys, Zepce ain't much of a town, although it had quite a history during the war. It's definately not one of Bosnia's traditional big clubs.
