Can bigsoccer adopt a policy that posts stating Team X raped or will rape Team Y will get edited to "crush" or "demolish" or some verb other than "rape?"
The moderation policy in the USMNT forums already forbids "rape" used in that sense. The problem with an automated response though is that would eliminate acceptable as well as unacceptable usage.
So we should just report it? That's fine with me. I would suggest some kind of communication to the user so he knows that use of the word is off limits.
If it doesn't already happen, I'd wonder why. It should be common sense, IMO, to let the poster know via a PM that their post (with link or screenshot) was edited or deleted and the reason why.
The general rule is that if a moderator edits a user's post, then they should let them know it happened and why it was done. There are different ways of letting people know and these differ in intensity (e.g. leaving a note in the post vs contacting them directly). With something like this, my strong preference is to let people know via direct communication, because this has to do with making this place more inclusive. To answer your question, please do report the use of "rape" in that sense. We appreciate folks' help in that regard.
I once proposed adding it to the censor for a while to get this point across and was crushed by users and mods alike I think. Some people think this is an acceptable, non-offense use of the word.
This use of the word isn't acceptable (nor is the action), but it shouldn't be a censored word and that is where the problems would begin.
Indeed. If someone wants to talk about the Eric Frimpong case, for example, the word "rape" should be fine in that situation. However, to say "TeamA raped TeamB 7-1 over the weekend" isn't. It isn't difficult to think of a better alternative.
Right - but everyone knows how to skirt the censor when it's needed - and I wasn't proposing this on a permanent basis. Only to foster debate and awareness. Some disagree with you that the word is inappropriate in a sporting context.
Agree 100%, because that should stop repeat offenders. Or highlight repeat offenders, which I would hope would lead to more extreme measures. By the way, the picture above is how I picture all the supermods look in real life. Maybe so, but then, people suck.
One of the problems is that not everyone views this as an issue - so any measures we take really don't change people's minds or behaviors. They just view it as unwelcome PC. This is why I liked the idea of the censor, because it makes people outraged about censorship! enough that they end up in lengthy debates with the opposite side. Not everyone will benefit from that debate, but some might.
I always listen to my children's initial arguments. But if I realize they're full of crap, which is most of the time, I just tell them to shut the ******** up. I'm a great dad!
One problem is that's not the only context that exists on these board. Prime example. On this point, I know the censor isn't the solution. But the report button is. -- By the way, is the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics is still censored? Let's find out: ********** Valley. ... edit ... Apparently that's now kosher. Good.
