IMHO the 4 most prestigious trophies in club soccer in the US/Canada are as follows... 1. MLS Cup 2. U.S. Open Cup/Voyageurs Cup (Canada) 3. CONCACAF Champions' Cup 4. Supporters Shield How would you rank these Honors?
The CONCACAF Champions Cup became the CONCACAF Champions League and then the Concacaf Champions League when Concacaf changed their name to not being in all capitals. No MLS club has won it since it became a Champions League, but I would hope that fans would consider it the most prestigious, especially if the Club World Cup remains and an MLS club got to compete with a club from another confederation in something other than a friendly. It's like in NCAA sports when many teams look at conference championships as the biggest accomplishment they can have because they would prefer to be national champions but know that's not realistic.
Weird question. Is it was we prefer as fans? What we think is more important? In order of what I'd like to win: 1. CCL 2. MLS Cup 3. VC 4. SS
I'm with the philosopher Kant in that I'd like to win the SS because it means I'd have gone to or watched on TV a lot of games that my team won and thus had the most total minutes of happiness. But MLS Cup got us a star on our shirts. And finals are really fun if you win. But CCL could get us a game against Real Madrid in somewhere exotic, that'd be really fun. Plus, you know, we won a final. US Open Cup has a final. And a sense of relief whenever you don't get knocked out by a minor league team (The Rapids usually do). It's almost like we don't have to choose. What is the point of this?
1. CCL 2. MLS Cup 3T. US Open Cup/Voyageurs Cup (I rate these as a single entity since there is not cross-over between the teams eligible. If pushed I would rate the V-Cup slightly ahead since this is still the only pathway to CCL for Canadian sides from MLS) 3T. Supporters Shield
No love for the Eastern and Western Conference Championship trophies? Win it and your club earned their Cup Final ticket. My club has won both Conference Championship trophies oddly enough. MLS life.
1.CCL 2.MLS CUP 3.US OPEN CUP 4.SS The only way I see us competing for any of these trophies is if Andi (majority) owner sells his 51% to Joe (minority) owner.
To me the Supporter's Shield is more meaningful than the US Open Cup. 1. MLS Cup 2. CCL 3. SS 4. US Open Cup
I thought this thread was going to be ranking the trophies themselves on appearance. /leaving disappointed.
For me: 1. MLS Cup 2. Champions League 3. Supporters Shield 4. US Open Cup 5. Whatever the hell that MLS vs. Liga MX thing is What I think it is for most people: 1. MLS Cup 2. Supporters Shield 3. Champions League 4. US Open Cup 5. Whatever the hell that MLS vs. Liga MX thing is
Ooh, let's do that instead! @CMeszt 1. MLS Cup 2. CCL (new trophy) 3. USOC 4. Voyageurs Cup (the cup itself is super generic, I see it as a champagne bucket all the time, but I dig the base). 5. Supporters Shield ...... 18,357. Old CCL trophy
This is the CONCACAF League trophy. U.S. teams don't compete for this right now but CPL teams will start doing so this year:
Those old MLS cups are terrible. The shield is fine since it is actually called the shield, but I like the open cup one the best. Then CONCACAF, then MLS CUP. I guess Shield goes 4th then, but they shouldn't change it.
Fun factoid, this year will mark the 12th year (already!) that the "new" MLS Cup has been used, meaning it'll have been used for 12/24 MLS seasons. Next year takes it into "majority" territory.
