Mexico Anthem is pretty long (people only sing a portion of it). According to Google Greece has the longest with 158 stanzas. Aslo, if Google is right, Japan has the shortest and the oldest (one of the oldest) English Translation: May your reign Continue for a thousand, eight thousand generations, Until the pebbles Grow into boulders Lush with moss.
I can't see the Star Spangled Banner being replaced by something else at sports events, even though I think it should. It's an early 19th Century drinking song, and nothing special. But sports are very conservative, looking to their past (throwback uniforms, celebrating history, etc.) rather than the future. I went to a Meet the Revs event in 1995 where Jonathan Kraft was there. I asked him about doing something a little different, like playing "America the Beautiful" instead of the SSB at games. It would have been a bit of a talking point for a new team and brought attention. I cited how the Filthy-delphia Flyers used to do God Bless America (BTW, I hate, hate, hate that song!) at their games, but it was different than everyone else. Of course Sonny the K just had this glazed look in his eyes and muttered something about the SSB always being played at the Patriots games. Pretty much every conversation I had with the man (and there were more than a few) featured that look and non-answer. Well, except for the time he was pissed off and called the MetroStars "a bunch of thugs!"
How did this go from the National Anthem to flag burning? I reported it for the racism that it is. And don't put this on DK. If a poster is wrong, the poster is wrong. You don't know what happens behind the scenes, or who says what. Agreed that is it not the best song to be used - I don't have a good solution, but rotating it is not really a great answer either. That said, the Spanish version would be nice to hear on a regular basis of what ever replaces the current song. Another aspect, which has just as much meaning, is that it is also over used.
No it’s not. To say that is just specious and lazy. The music may have come from such a song, but that is far from saying the anthem itself was created to be a drinking song.
The SSB is difficult enough to sing (properly) when sober, let alone after consuming mass quantities. How did it ever become a "drinking song"?
When you don't have electric entertainment or even electric light, you can take the time to learn all types of things including learning to carry challenging tunes while hammered.
I have no idea how the tune was sung or what the words were when it was a drinking song — likely something easier to annunciate when under the influence than Francis Scott Key’s poem.
My guess is the music was modified a bit when it became the National Anthem. Probably not a literal note-for-note transcription.
Woman charged with felony assault in racist tirade on NYC subway Funny story. It was November 2016, a day or two after the election. I got on the train and just a few moments later, right next to me, I heard a Russian (sounding) lady fighting with a black dude. I was like, "Hey, we're all a little stressed right now, let's just chill." She said that he was threatening her and was about to pounce on her. I kind of surmised that she had some mental health issues and was probably super racist and she was getting all triggered-like. I just stood in between the two as they shouted and shot angry glares at each other. It was very tense. I said to the Russian lady, "Hey, let's go to the next car." But she said he would follow her. I made eye contact with the AA dude and kind of winked at him and he nodded back at me. I said to the lady, "It's OK, I'll protect you." So at the next stop, she and I went to the next car. And that was it. You know where to send my Nobel. Anyway, I'm about 90% sure it's the same chick from this video.
I'm no expert on it, but I think not. "To Anachreon in Heaven" was pretty well known right up to the revolution when the tune was swiped for a drinking song for the Sons of Liberty-- "Adams and Liberty." Sam I think, not John but I could easily be wrong. But at any rate, Key would have known it well. It would have been quite natural for him to realize the first fragments he came up with-- "rocket's red glare, bombs bursting in air" by his account IIRC-- scanned with the tune and write the rest around it. And I have never run into any suggestion that the tune was ever altered at all; but there are, yknow, actual experts out there somewhere-- they might know better?
Cool. Either way, it's a great tune. Great lyrics. Befitting a great country, whether some believe it or not.
I can't believe what I just read on the last 3 pages. The world is coming apart at the seams and you're all in a snit about a couple of lousy songs. Ps...O' Canada in either language does it for me! Pps....Go Habs!!
Is pretty short and not hard, I am not sure why people do not like it. La Marseillaise is supposed to be the "best" anthem in the world, but it is still a war song like 80-90% of the anthems out there, since many are adopted after some sort of war for independence or a revolution/civil war.
Most of America is listening to music or a morning zoo on their rides to work. Not solving world peace. And nothing gets you ready & alert for work than some public transportation beefin.
Is 4 stanzas, that is not long, I guess I am using the Mexico one for comparison. a lot of the ones written in the 1800's tend to be on the long side. But maybe there are many shorter ones out there. luckily they tend to use the short versions in Olympic games and other National events. I wonder what they do with Japan, do they repeat it a few times or just lots of music at the beginning and the end.

On his way out the door, Paul Ryan is adding thousands of visa for Ireland. I think this belongs in the racism thread not the immigration thread.
