Some of this has been discussed before, and probably posted as well, either in the previous version of this thread, or one of politics thread (Trump?), but here you go... http://america.aljazeera.com/opinio...tudes-still-divide-the-two-major-parties.html For the most part, the public abhors and condemns such blatant racism. But recent data on public sentiments suggest that many Americans hold beliefs affirming subtler, structural racism and that the popularity of these believes divides sharply along party and political lines. This is White Privilege, not acknowledging that racism still exists even if somebody does not use the N-word. This graph, along with others, are about attitudes. But it shows the views typical of each party - and for those of you who love stereotypes, there are ALWAYS outliers. What I find sad is how many people, both Democrat and Republican, who think that slavery has little effect on Blacks today. What I would like to know, though, is the relationship between the first two questions on the above chart. Lest anybody think the Dems are better, there is this: Silver and McCann concluded that “there’s a partisan gap, although not as large of one as some political commentators might assert. There are white racists in both parties. By most questions, they represent a minority of white voters in both parties.” However, assuming Bonilla-Silva is correct that institutional racism is the primary problem today, the questions Silver and McCann used didn’t adequately address the real partisan gaps on race. Just because one is a Democrat, does not mean one is not racist. Or, at least, hold negative stereotypes.
http://www.msnbc.com/up/watch/senat...2&tse_id=INF_e9c7c521a8a647678ec6d4edfa876251 Very cool, and about time. @dark knight I'm sure you know about this. Anything to add?
That is cool - but it also makes me appreciate why my dad reacted with so much anger to the reparations check. I loved Allegiance - if y'all are in NYC and have a chance to check it out, people that don't have the connections to it that I do tell me they also liked it a lot. It's a little weird seeing such a serious historical thing as a musical, but I thought it worked.
I follow George Takei on FB and he was linking a lot of positive things about this performance. Made me interested. Not enough to fly to NY just to watch the show, but interested.
http://america.aljazeera.com/articl...says-drug-dealers-impregnate-white-girls.html Maine’s Republican Gov. Paul LePage said out-of-state drug dealers are impregnating "young white" girls, and his remarks were quickly denounced by critics on Thursday as racial fearmongering. LePage, talking about Maine's heroin epidemic, described out-of-state drug dealers as "guys with the name D-Money, Smoothie, Shifty" and said "half the time they impregnate a young white girl before they leave." Geez, that is so 70s.
No, it isn't- it's today. LePage, talking about Maine's heroin epidemic, described out-of-state drug dealers as "guys with the name D-Money, Smoothie, Shifty" and said "half the time they impregnate a young white girl before they leave." From a distance? With their eyes or voice? Despite protests from said White girls?
I've only heard somebody called "shifty" or "smoothie" in 70s moves. D-money is more 90s and the 00s, from my experience.
The Seal Of Whitesboro, NY, Depicts A White Man Strangling A Native American Residents vote Monday on whether to change it.
Oh FFS. The seal of Whitesboro commemorates a wrestling match between Hugh White and an Oneida-- the Oneida challenged him at a party, and lost-- presumably intentionally as White was way past his prime at that point-- and then pronounced White a good fellow. The upshot was an era of good fellowship between the tribe and the new Connecticut Yankee settlers led by White, which supported the survival of the settlement. You could look it up. Have the residents completely forgotten their origin myth when even I, who was only there occasionally and briefly, remember it?
So it's a commemoration of a tragic miscalculation by the Iroquois Confederacy? It should be put up at Turning Stone.
Its at points like this that we really need Segroves. The Oneida were the tribe that backed the revolution, and yes they got seriously screwed-- but they did far better than the other four. I don't think it was a miscalculation, I think it was the behavior of a basically very friendly group of people in the face of unfriendly historical changes; and I wouldn't make fun of it myself.
The outrage machine at work. If they want to change it they should, but they should know the history. To be fair it maybe the author and some lefties that do not know the history. Tge symbol still looks kind of weird IMO.
No, I get that- I thought you were saying that the Maine governor's sentiments were from the 70s. I was saying that this is mainstream thought among conservatives today.
Who can forget "The Grand Fisting" from Pawnee, Indiana. Of course, their Native American Indian murals... Well... And who can forget the zoo...
This reminds me of that South Park episode where the kids can't see anything wrong with the South Park flag. They ended up changing the flag. Here's the old flag: and the updated flag:
I know that is from an older episode but just want add that South Park absolutely killed it this year. You any of you who have not seen it, look for it online. This season was epically on point.
Interesting article. This could also go in the oregon militia thread or the Trump thread, but I think it fits here the best: http://www.psmag.com/politics-and-law/white-paranoia-persecution-and-privilege
