True, and lest we forget Belgium, the first world football champion at the 1920 Summer Olympics. Truly amazing stuff: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_FIFA_World_Cup#International_football_before_1930 Blast from the past indeed!
Cool, then you agree: Belgium, 1st world football champion. 1920 Summer Olympics. Glad that is cleared up. Thanks.
Are you Italian? Here I leave a film in your language, pay attention to what you wrote in the first seconds of the video:
campionato mondiale... i get it.. but i have issue with recognizing these olympic wins the same as a world cup title. in that case... should Canada have a star on their jersey?? they won the olympic gold in 1904
Additional stars on Uruguayan kit for 2 world football championships at 1924+1928 Summer Olympics. Belgium got 1st world football championship at 1920 Summer Olympics. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_FIFA_World_Cup#International_football_before_1930 Knowledge is power. Thanks.
The only Olympic championships organized and recognized by FIFA as world championships were those of Paris 1924 and Amsterdam 1928, never before or after.
The Uruguay national football team that won the 1928 Olympic tournament During the 1920 final, the Czechoslovakia national football team walked from the field of play in order to raise awareness of their displeasure regarding the refereeing of John Lewis and the militarised mood within the stadium in Antwerp. In the 1924 and 1928 Olympic games, the first South American teams entered the competition: Uruguay and Argentina. Uruguay won both Olympics and FIFA became conscious that the Olympic movement was not only hindering the ability of nations to participate on an equal footing but, given that the Olympics only permitted amateurs to participate, did not represent the true strength of the international game.
Uruguay has won only two world cups, but is a four-time world champion. Two gold medals in the amateur era and two cups in the professional era.
And don't forget Belgium's gold medal in the amateur era: 1920 Summer Olympics. One big family of world champs!
The first world soccer championship organized by FIFA and played under FIFA regulations was that of Paris 1924, promoted by Jules Rimet himself. So it was the thing that the championship was played a month before the beginning of the Olympic Games.
Uruguay-Switzerland played the final in Colombes on June 9, 1924 The Olympic Games of Paris began on July 5, 1924.
Some misconceptions about events at that 1924 Olympics. The 1924 Olympic Games started on May 4. Rugby union and Football events were played earlier in the 1924 Olympics because the largest venue at Colombes would later host additional main events like Athletics. The Rugby union competition ended before the Football tournament began, for instance. The largest stadium at Colombes had a maximum capacity of 45K spectators (by 1924). Not sure from where FIFA got the *60K spectators* figure for the gold medal match, but FIFA's records indicate that 40,522 spectators were accounted for each medal match: https://www.fifa.com/tournaments/ar...4/matches/round=197028/match=32314/index.html Having said all that, the 1924 Olympics indeed held the 1st world football tournament. Before 1924, only European teams had participated at the Olympic football tournament. Good stuff.
FIFA agreed at the 1924 Congress to take responsibility for the organization of the Olympic Tournaments of Football after ratifying the proposal that "on condition that the Olympic Football Tournaments are held according to the regulations of FIFA, the latter will recognize this tournament as a world championship of football". The 1924 tournament was a huge success and was attended by more than 60,000 spectators in the final between Uruguay and Switzerland. The South Americans won by 3 to 0 and were welcomed as world champions in Montevideo. The South American superiority was again evident in the Olympic Football Tournaments held in 1928 in Amsterdam. The Uruguayans did not renounce a new victory against their Argentine neighbors. The success of the Olympic Games increased FIFA's desire to have its own World Championship. He FIFA President Jules Rimet led the fight to obtain the necessary means to achieve this dream. TO Following the proposal of the Executive Committee, the FIFA Congress of May 26, 1928 held in Amsterdam decided to organize an official FIFA World Championship: the World Cup was born! A year later, Uruguay, a two-time Olympic champion who planned the centennial celebration of his independence, was commissioned to organize the first FIFA World Cup. https://web.archive.org/web/2014042...fifafacts/mcwc/ip-201_02s_fwc-origin_8819.pdf
Do you think that Uruguay gets 4 stars in the shirt of pure blackmailers that we are? And FIFA loves us so much to allow us such a lie?
Why are the 1924 and 1928 World Championships so questioned but not those of Mussolini 1934 and 1938?
