CLEVELAND CITY STARS REMAIN UNDEFEATED IN 0-0 DRAW vs. WILMINGTON

May 26th, 2007 A commanding 3-0 victory by the Cleveland City Stars Reserves Team over Dynamo FC set the tone for tonight's match between the Cleveland City Stars and the Wilmington Hammerheads.
Although neither team managed to put one in the net, each team walked away with one more point in the standings, the Cleveland City Stars remain undefeated, and the Wilmington Hammerheads are still searching for that elusive first win.

"We are looking for a strong effort for the whole 90 minutes tonight. Last week we were a bit lethargic from about mid way through the second half," noted CCS Head Coach Martin Rennie before the game. The Wilmington Hammerheads gave the Stars a very physically challenging match but the City Stars responded with an equally aggressive effort taking 20 shots to the Hammerheads 7.

"Wilmington has historically been one of the strongest clubs in the league. They are off to an uncharacteristically slow start. No one wants to be their first win – including us," commented Aaron Tredway, Executive Director. The City Stars maintained possession for a majority of the game but were unable to convert their opportunities. "It was more a case of us not finishing than them beating us. The Hammerheads seemed desperate for a draw and just jammed the box with defenders," said Coach Rennie after the game.

In fact, the traffic jam that Rennie referred to left bodies strewn all over the box on several occasions. And on one particular chance in the last minutes of the match even the Hammerhead keeper found himself sprawled on the ground leaving an open net for Nigel Codrington. Fortunately for Wilmington, another defender just managed to get a body part in front of what certainly would have been the game winner sending it careening wide of the net.

Shortly after, Wilmington had a chance of their own in stoppage time when a Wilmington midfielder sprinted up the right side. CCS defender Anthony Stovall made a gutsy play taking a ball square in the face to stall the offensive challenge and keep the score tied at nil.

The 1,423 fans in attendance let out a collective sigh and watched as time ran out on their City Stars win streak. "Support from the fans is so important to a new team. The crowd's energy was in part responsible for that last minute goal which earned us the win rather than a tie at the opener last week," Rennie acknowledged. Although history did not repeat itself tonight, the fans enjoyed an entertaining night of soccer and hopefully walked away with a better appreciation for just how physical a game soccer really is.

The Cleveland City Stars will be on the road next week at the Harrisburg City Islanders, but will return home to Krenzler Stadium on Saturday June 9th to host the Cincinnati Kings.
