If Westberg plays, absolutely. Otherwise, Guzan played more matches last year in a better league (FLC vs. Ligue 2).
Good point. If it's based on minutes, Guzan should be fine as long as he plays somewhere, because as far as I know, Quentin is the definite No. 2 keeper at his club.
Westberg could be on his way to Portugal to play for mid-table Beira Mar: http://www.ojogo.pt/27-181/artigo934277.asp The article includes quotes that Westberg apparently gave to a French on-line paper.
MLSsoccer.com has confirmed that Évian have offered Westberg a two-year extension, but with no guarantee of a shot at veteran Betrand Laquait's job. Meanwhile, his agent is in discussions with Beira-Mar, as well as a handful of admirers spread about in the top two divisions from England, France and Italy. http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2011/07/01/american-exports-westberg-may-leave-french-ligue-1
Interesting because the blurb from the French article above is quite clear that Westberg has extended his stay with Evian...
Now Westberg has reportedly re-signed with Evian for one year with an option for a second year provided the club remains in Ligue 1.
Seems like Beira Mar really wanted to make him their first choice keeper, so kudos to Q for being willing to battle it out at Evian.
Really remarkable how far his career has come in 1 year, considering this time last year he was a Ligue 2 reject barnstorming for a job.
Westberg played a half each in two preseason games for ETG: a 0-2 loss to Nantes and 3-0 win over Bastia. http://www.etgfc.com/2011/07/12/en-nette-progression/ http://www.etgfc.com/2011/07/09/l’etg-reprend-timidement/ ETG have signed Jonathan Mensah, a Ghanaian defender, on a free.
Report out of Lens that L.2 Clermont is looking to bring Westberg in to replace departing keeper Fabre. Not sure how that works with his signing a new Evian contract though. http://www.lensois.com/breve-rclens-40736-westberg-vers-clermont-pour-liberer-fabre-.html
Loan possibly? Maybe he actually hasn't signed the new deal and it's just on the table. Who knows. I'm interested to find out. Good that he has had suitors. Hopefully he can be the #1 somewhere.
He played the 2nd half for ETG in a 1-1 draw with aforementioned Clermont. http://www.etgfc.com/2011/07/16/l’etg-peut-souffler/
First choice 'keeper Laquait injured his thigh in a friendly against Nice. The article says that the early evaluation is not optimistic. Westberg could get a chance to play when the season opens.
Some sort of piece on Westberg starting from the official ETG FC website. http://www.etgfc.com/2011/07/28/westberg-dans-les-starting-blocks/
And he did start the most recent friendly for Evian against Bocanegra's St Etienne. Evian lost 3-0. http://www.etgfc.com/2011/07/30/etg-fc-saint-etienne-0-0-en-cours/
Westberg shut out Nice last weekend: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/player/_/id/85074/quentin-westberg?cc=5901 Unbelievable this guy was barnstorming trying to pick up a backup job in Ligue 2 a little over a year ago. It just goes to show you how fast things can turn in this sport. Needless to say: CAP HIM NOW
I'm pretty sure Westberg is now the team's second-stringer, unfortunately. Evian purchased Brøndby starting keeper Stephan Andersen earlier this week, and everything I've seen indicates they intend for him to be the starter from now on.
