More crazy rumors: http://www.espn.com/soccer/fifa-wor...an-kuwait-if-22-world-cup-expands-to-48-teams
unbelievable how greedy FIFA is ... it has no limits! but hey, great idea for beach soccer world cup ... there would be no shortage of the sand
Been saying it for months now. If they vote yes on 48 teams they might as well vote on a new venue too. This becoming one big joke of an idea.
Only 48 teams? Why not 96 or 192? Just stop now and give everyone a World Cup trophy. Think of all the time, effort, money, and political maneuvering that would be saved.
Expansion is inevitable due to money and everyone wanting a bigger piece of the pie. Russia earned about 6 BILLION dollars in revenue for FIFA. More teams means more games and more markets... ... which means more FIFA can charge Television Networks, also sponsors will be charged more money because their precious items and /or services will have more advertising during more games that the whole world will be watching.
If that's the case, China should be given an automatic berth in the championship match, so that those 1.5 billion Chinese will be sure to watch.
Like I said, I'd be surprised if they are one of the favorites unless Qatar 2022 goes belly-up like we all hope it does, in which case Asia would be open for consideration again.
If not 2030 then 2034. The point was made that China will be a new market that hosts and makes money and that is certainly a possibility in the future.
I thought they eliminated that stupid rule that a confederation's members can't host for two world cups after one of it's members is host. China is not really the same part of the world as Qatar. Egypt maybe, or Turkey, but not China.
I don't think "being in the same part of the world" has a lot to do with it. Qatar, Egypt and Turkey may all be in the Middle East in some respect or another, but they are in different confederations, which I think is the primary criteria. In other words, should Qatar not be stripped of the 2022 Cup, that should negatively impact a Chinese bid for 2030 a lot more than an Egyptian bid for that year.
No, they didn't - that's why the NorthAm bid only had Morocco for opposition (SouthAm waiting on 2030, Europe and Asia ineligible to participate). If FIFA were to stick to principles, Qatar 2022 should rule Asia out of the 2030 bid race. "stick to principles"
There were reports that FIFA was going to open up bids similar to the Olympics not based on a continental rotation but I have no idea how those talks have progressed.
Today in "sound and fury over Qatar". https://www.foxsports.com.au/footba...p/news-story/0a61d49d1e4f2aa560ede554f01139af Report: Qatar paid $880 million to FIFA, partially just before being awarded 2022 World Cup That's the actual headline - "partially just before" is meant to mean some of it was before the vote (21 days) and some after (3 days). What this (poorly written, even by Australian standards) article leaves out is found (probably) in the sourced doco https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/exclusive-qatars-secret-880m-world-cup-payments-to-fifa-m6k8j8z3n Revealed: Qatar’s secret $880m World Cup payments to Fifa This (at least the free bit) notes that the amount was based around a $100m figure for a success fee in broadcasts with Al Jazeera - so I don't know where the other $780m comes from or if it was a "if you hold in in our country it'll be a whole lot more lucrative for us so we'll pay more".
