Haven’t watched a lot of the replays this weekend (currently watching the Liverpool-Man U game), but it must have been a fairly uneventful weekend. My quibble is to say that the Liverpool-Man U game shows why a white or light gray shirt is a good idea. LIV in red, Allison is yellow, MNU in navy blue, De Gea in green. Crew wore their blue shirts, which was really the only option. I’m not sure our USSF blues would be a decent option. Having a gray shirt for these “dark vs dark” games would be good since so many keeper kits are yellow and green.
What’s wrong with wearing the same color as the goalkeeper? Until GK’s stop wearing yellow and green like us, people (referees included) are going to have to get over it. They do it weekly in the games I see on tv.
I agree as well. This whole five jersey thing is a way for OSI to make money. I’ve said for a long time that three jersey colors (black, gray/light blue, and pink/orange) is enough. But it’ll never happen.
I've never seen stripes on a soccer field. When I started in the 70's, like most of the world, we wore black with with white collars and socks were either solid black or had a white section at the top. IIRC, HS in many places used the stripes so that the "HS refs" could use their shirts from other sports. (Where I was HS refs wore soccer kits, not HS ref kits--though we were saddled with the dual system.) (The first time I recall ever seeing a ref in a non-black shirt was when the NY cosmos decided they wanted to wear black shirts (early 80s?), and the NASL had red shirts for the refs just for those games.)
Yes. It seems that our refs were also our umpires and our basketball refs. We also had the solid black as well as the black with white narrow stripes.
Went to London a couple of weeks ago. Went to the Watford/City and Spurs/Southampton match. Got great seats for the Watford match (also for Spurs, but Wembley is really not a great place). I was practically AR2 This poor guy was so abused in the first half. Three 'controversial' calls in the 1st half in City's favor set off the fans (best line: Hey line-O, I think you need a breather after that run, you unfit c*nt). Anyhow, I recorded the match at home. He nailed all three calls. He was on his game.

In Man City vs. Crystal Palace, at 59:57 a ballboy picked up the ball while it was on the field. It would have rolled out of play, and there were no players nearby. After a dropped ball, Crystal Palace kicked it out to give Man City the goal kick they would have had without the ballboy.

I'm not so sure it would have been a goal kick. The ball didn't go over the goal line...the spin kept it rolling along the goal line. I think, if it wasn't pick up by the ball boy....it would have gone over the touch line, which would have resulted in a throw in for Man City. But in the scheme of things...no big deal, nothing to see here...don't even know why I commented really.
In the Arsenal-Burnley game, I'm struggling to understand how Barnes of Burnley (#10) didn't get a second caution, much less a straight red, that I thought he deserved for the cleats to the Arsenal player's midsection. I'll have to watch it again as I just returned from a 6-a-side tournament where I had the privilege of tossing a fan in my last game.
I think that the angle of thr camera shot was misleading. I think Barnes stepped on the ball which was right next to the Arsenal player. The prone player made no reaction. If he had been cleated, I think his reaction would have been dramatic.

Interesting offside consideration in ars v bha, leading up to first goal. Minute six Lacazette, PIOP, moves towards the corner pursuing a ball nodded forward by a teammate. He pulls up, apparently realizing his offside situation, not getting within say 3 or four yards. A defender collects the ball deep in the corner and touches it to the outside to clear and lacazette closes on him and deflects the ball. I dont see anything wrong at all with the decision to not call offside on lacazette. The announcers later say PGMOL has come out to say that this should have been offside.
This was almost identical to an example that PGMO put out right when the Law was tweaked -- that one was QPR v Chelsea I think, PIOP stops chasing ball, but closes down defender, limiting his options once the defender takes possession of the ball. Deemed to be interfering with opponent.
