Washington Spirit owner in talks about selling majority share of NWSL club https://www.washingtonpost.com/spor...sl-club/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.cb3c33b8d75c
The sale would keep the Spirit in the DMV, and Lynch has been a lightning rod both for the Rapinoe anthem incident (though the "homophobe" charge was always overstated -- the Spirit and DCU Women might lead the way the last few years in openly gay players) and a curious affectation for relying on local talent for coaches and players. Some people might view the new owner with a bit of suspicion, but unless he comes in and insists his daughter needs to play for the team, I think it'll be OK. Besides, his daughter has already played for a Spirit WPSL team.
Without a whole lot more information (that we'll probably never get), it's impossible to know if this is good or bad. So let's hope good!
Yeah, that was certainly interesting. In the WPS year, she was buried on the bench, and I think a lot of us wondered what she was doing there. (She was, of course, also married to coach Aaran Lines.) But she did a decent job in the 2013 season. Then she got pregnant and retired. The question that has to be asked, though: Did Sahlen lose interest when his daughter was no longer playing?
Not to mention that the coach this businessman is interested in apparently was his daughter's coach in high school. With not a very good competitive record to show for it... =edit= Sorry, went back to check, and the suggested coach's bad record was for coaching a Scottish club, not coaching the daughter's high school team. Still seems far too all-in-the-family for my liking. Would much rather see the rumored DCU interest come true than have the businessman as majority owner.
