Our disaster has more to do with dumb coaches moving away from recipes of success. We got more out a less talented squad in 2016 than the one that Ventura wasted with dumb 4-2-4. Moving away from the style that everyone uses now, save for Spain, which is debatable since their "defense" is typically played with a million passes in the middle of the field where other teams are fine to let them have possession, is dumb. We did dumb stuff at the coaching level and who is surprised? That moron Ventura had only ever won a Serie C title some 24 years ago, lol.
Those teams actually played more attacking at times and were more dynamic and pragmatic while they were attacking. They actually won games during regulation too outside of the semis. You are comparing apples and oranges a bit here.
Sadly WE are so much more talented now, but still have to go through so much drama. I need to remember it's all worth it in the end

They just got a 50 million loan/advance to spend on players. If they were swimming in money, they wouldn't need it. LFV is in hot water and this is prob his last term at the helm if he wins elections. He's always had a dream to win champions league and brought back JJ and will go all out now.
