I am glad I have you to correct me on my spelling of polish foods. Back in '99 I spelled pierogi wrong and you corrected me.

by the way, I live in Detroit now.

why do you like Legia anyway?

It says you still live in Miami, Ohio in your profile.

I like Legia because when I decided to follow soccer there were no teams (that I knew of) in the US. So I decided to support the team in my father's hometown, which was Warsaw. That was like 30 years ago so I don't know if Polonia was in the 1st division at that time. But all I knew was Legia.

And the only time I saw them play was when they game to Chicago for a friendly with the Fire. The only match I saw in Poland was when I was studying in Krakow and saw Wisla play. So it's not like I have a real emotional attachment like some of the other boys here have.

the only reason I have an emotional attachment with Polonia is because the guys who used to threaten me support Legia. I miss those days.

it looks like both Legia and Polonia are having a good start thus far.

do you speak fluent polish? I don't, but I understand it pretty well.

well, considering your "middle class ted" comment above, you've made the right choice. legia is generally considered the working class club in warsaw, while p*****a is said to have more of a middle class following. it's not 100% accurate (they were founded by railway workers), but there is some truth to it. it is sometimes the club of choice for those who like soccer, but don't want to be associated with legia's crowd trouble and general perception of thuggery.

  6. Yes, I understand what you mean by saying "casual" and I was responding to you taking this into consideration. Of course you are right that you don't see very much of the casual culture present among the followers of the big clubs. But I assure you that quite a few (although they are certainly not the majority or even a good chunk) small supporters clubs. An interesting lecture of "To My Kibice" revealed that there are supporters' groups of 20-25 people in small clubs that wear pretty much the same fairly expensive clothing. Like I said the clothing firms vary among regions in Poland but, of course, you are right about the clothing being not so outrageously expensive as it may be in the West. As far as I know most of these groups choose from domestic manufacturers. On the other hand you are absolutely right about the culture beyond wearing clothes. Unfortunately, this is certainly a black hole in Poland--the understanding and following are non-existant and the thinking is so primitive.

  7. This is not a scientific project so my numbers may be a little off but I am too lazy to search for the more accurate numbers.

According to INS there are about 85000 naturalized US citizens that were born in Poland and live in the Chicago Metropolitan Area now. Also, according to the same agency, there are around 70000 green card holders in the same area and this is mostly the outcome of the recent green card lotteries, especially those which took place in the mid 1990's. You may expect these people to soon become American citizens although a fraction of them will never even attempt to take the citizenship test for language reasons. Moreover, there are about 120000 Polish illegals in Chicagoland, again according to INS. Some may claim that this is an underestimated number but there are some indications that it may be quite right, namely the estimates and mailing lists of the marketing companies that deal with the Polish speaking population of Chicagoland. According to these companies, the number of Polish speaking people, visiting the Polish-speaking businesses in Chicagoland is around 250000. If you add the citizens, permanent residents and the estimate of illegals, you are going to get about the same number.

Now these numbers make it really interesting. All of the sudden, the myth of a million member Polish population in Chicago disappears. If you have this reality check, you finally realize that Chicago is only a small Polish village or town as compared to what you may encounter in Poland and is certainly no Warsaw, Lodz, Krakow, Wroclaw, Poznan, or even Katowice or Gdansk.

  8. I think you are going a little bit into extremes. I agree that you are not Polish if you have never VISITED a gray apartment building (not many of them left--they paint them now!!!), never drank from a beer kiosk (not necesarily being underage; that leaves out a good chunk of population out that actually lives in Poland--I don't say much maybe 30-40%) and your third point about the football special train--this one is only for the Polish elite!--maybe change it to: have never attended a football match and it is going to be fine.

    P.S.
Too bad I did not listen to you about the patriotic crap I wanted to enforce around the 9/11 anniversary. It did not work because it should not but this was only an idea that people liked but nobody wanted to pick it up. I admit I was stupid.

  9. Bravo for krolpolski!!! I would never ever recognize what the freaking "glumky" might be.

I have a question here for some of the Poles.

There's a rumour going on that after the Legia - Utrecht match a Polish skinhead was hit over the head with a flower pot and that he died some days ago. Is this true?

I don't believe it but I'm curious. Utrecht are very good at telling stories you know.

Remember, hooligans are not people. They are animals that belong in jail. Nothing more to say about them.

I have to bring this topic up because I have seen that nobody is writing about the events in Warszawa last week..It looked unbelivable! Hooligans fighting the police (Legia hools). If this is how our fans will be like knocking out the German police then all of Germany is in trouble. While watching the reportaz on the post game fights, they showed another one from about 3 wks ago or so when Wisla played Arka and after the game the whole pitch was filled with hooligans. I was surprised I didnt see that on the news the same day it happend. I went to the Arka Gdynia site for the score against Wisla but I didnt see anything about a zadyma. It looks like PZPN are not doing anything and are not being serious with this problem.

Well, I know Wisla had a ban on fans or money or something didn't they?

And it's Arka, what can you expect...

On a sidenote, I think the whole Polish hooligan thing in Germany is bloated. I doubt that Polish hools will cause many problems in Germany. If course, I may be wrong, and won't be that surprised if I am, but it's just a feeling.

I wouldnt be so sure.. yes during our international games we arent crazy.. but this is the world cup 300,00 are going and in those 300,000 there are crazy people. first of all we hate germans and they our in our group second we cant stand the english and we always fight with them. I think that Germany should be afraid and be cautious.
